Job Description

The Character FX Artist constructs and executes simulations to animate the hair, cloth, skin, and muscles of 3D character assets. Key responsibilities include producing cloth and hair simulations, refining shot animations, interpreting creative direction, resolving artistic and technical challenges, mastering departmental software, performing quality control, maintaining schedules, and collaborating with technical directors to improve workflows. This role is for a stop-motion animated feature project.
Must Have:
  • Produce cloth and hair simulations, prop animations, and refine shot animations.
  • Interpret creative direction to enhance the artistic direction of the film.
  • Creatively resolve challenges to align with shot-specific artistic vision, and identify any issues related to object penetration and intersection.
  • Master all relevant departmental software tools.
  • QC the work before publishing downstream.
  • Maintain schedules and deadlines and ensure all shot and asset targets are met.
  • Work with technical directors to improve workflows.
  • 3-5 years of feature film or relevant industry experience (CG and/or Visual Effects).
  • Strong knowledge of Maya and Houdini.
  • Thorough knowledge of cloth and hair simulation.
  • Excellent eye for motion and solid understanding of animation principles.
  • Experience in setting up sim templates in collaboration with rigging, modeling and groom departments.
  • Strong communication and technical skills.

Character Effects (CFX) Artist

All applicants must be residents of British Columbia, Canada.

Must be legally entitled to work in Canada ie. Citizen, PR, Open Work Permit.

Current open positions are immediate short contracts to mid Jan but potentially longer - to be confirmed.

At this time, we’re pleased to offer this role as an option to work from home OR work from our Vancouver studio in the beautiful Gastown area, close to the Waterfront Station in Downtown. (Remote is not available outside of BC; there is no hybrid)

Job Function

  • Produce cloth and hair simulations, prop animations, and refine shot animations throughout production.
  • Interpret creative direction to enhance the artistic direction of the film.
  • Creatively resolve challenges to align with shot-specific artistic vision, and identify any issues related to object penetration and intersection.
  • Master all relevant departmental software tools, proposing enhancements and optimizations as needed.
  • QC the work before publishing downstream.
  • Maintain schedules and deadlines and ensure all shot and asset targets are met.
  • Work with technical directors to improve workflows.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of feature film or relevant industry experience (CG and/or Visual Effects).
  • Strong knowledge of Maya and Houdini.
  • Thorough knowledge of cloth and hair simulation.
  • Excellent eye for motion and solid understanding of animation principles.
  • Experience in setting up sim templates in collaboration with rigging, modeling and groom departments.
  • Strong communication and technical skills.

Additional information

  • British Columbia Employees Pay Range: $35 - $50 (The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location of the position)
  • Candidates MUST be located in the Lower Mainland, British Columbia. This Role requires the candidate to work onsite, within our Vancouver Studio in Gastown. (Some remote work may be considered)
  • Zoic does not cover relocation costs.
  • Any and all remote positions require the candidate to have a reliable internet connection via ethernet and work on Pacific Standard Time.
