Job Summary
Northwestern Medicine is seeking a full-time Client Office Phlebotomist Float to perform phlebotomy and lab specimen collections across client sites in Crystal Lake, St. Charles, and Oak Brook. The role requires flexibility with hours, driving to multiple locations, and adherence to ethical and safety standards. Responsibilities include patient care, specimen processing, record keeping, and effective communication with patients and staff. Previous pediatric experience is strongly preferred.
Must Have
- Perform phlebotomy and other lab specimen collections per age related standards.
- Provide appropriate post-phlebotomy patient care.
- Identify need for patient medical assistance and call code as appropriate.
- Review/Record refrigerator temperature(s) and QC/QA records.
- Use manual requisitions and labels specimens appropriately.
- Label and process specimens according to establishes protocols and policies.
- Effectively procure blood specimens from infant, adult, geriatric, and wheelchair bound patients.
- Demonstrate competency for age related responsibilities.
- Understand the operation and maintenance of equipment pertinent to the job.
- Follow up with all outstanding orders on manifest log, and communicate all timed, completed or uncompleted draws/charges/results to the client office staff.
- Request/obtain written physician orders with all required information necessary for lab services requested and accurately order laboratory tests in computer system(s).
- Prioritize tasks and be able to multi-task.
- Perform and collect phlebotomy specimens within cost and maintain efforts of a less than 2 percent recollection or cancellation rate.
- Follow TJC National Patient Safety goals in regard to two patient identifiers and handwashing.
- Present a friendly, approachable, professional demeanor and appearance.
- Provide accurate information and timely updates to patients and customers.
- Address questions and concerns promptly, or identify appropriate person or recourse to do so.
- Demonstrate teamwork by helping co-workers within and across departments.
- Communicate effectively with others, respect diverse opinions and styles and acknowledge the assistance and contributions of others.
- Use organizational and unit/department resources efficiently.
- Manage work schedule efficiently, completing tasks and assignments on time.
- Participate in efforts to reduce costs, streamline work processes and improve and grow services.
- Communicate and notify Laboratory and/or Physician of problems with specimen procurement to ensure optimal care.
- Provide follow up on test results to appropriate individuals in a professional and courteous manner.
- Continuously update on information by reading emails and demonstrate compliance in MediaLab.
- Maintain a safe work environment, hold self-accountable for safe work practices, perform all aspects of daily work in a manner that contributes and ensures an environment of patient safety.
- Adhere to all recommendations and requirements of the Lab and Hospital Safety Committee.
- Perform all aspects of patient care in a manner that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Comply with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Perform clerical duties directly related to handling and processing of lab specimens.
- Perform clerical work; faxing, printing, filing, reviewing, and verbally releasing laboratory results.
- Initiate the meeting of responsibilities without prompting and can complete tasks independently without immediate supervision.
- Demonstrate the values of team concept on a consistent basis.
- Interact with all team members in a professional manner and aid/assist coworkers to complete assigned tasks.
- Travel to additional sites when needed.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Phlebotomy certification through a nationally recognized organization or training from a phlebotomy school or medical institution or one or more years of phlebotomy experience in a healthcare setting.
- Must be able to work Monday through Friday 8:30am to 5pm.
- Must be comfortable driving to three client sites in Crystal Lake, St. Charles and Oak Brook.
Good to Have

- Experience performing phlebotomy on a broad range of patient’s types.
- Experience with processing lab specimens, transferring specimens, and handling a centrifuge.
- Familiar with medical EMR systems.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.

Job Description
This is a full-time, 40 hours per week phlebotomy float position.
Previous experience with pediatric patients strongly preferred.
Must be able to work Monday through Friday 8:30am to 5pm. Flexibility with hours is needed for the locations who may start earlier or stay later than the posted hours.
Must be comfortable driving to three client sites in Crystal Lake, St. Charles and Oak Brook.
Base hourly rate includes float differential compensation.

Responsibilities:
- Performs phlebotomy and other lab specimen collections per age related standards.
