Motorola Solutions is seeking a Communication Systems Engineer to oversee all technical aspects of assigned projects, from award to system acceptance. This role involves providing post-sales technical expertise, designing complete radio networks, and ensuring client needs are met for mission-critical digital mobile communication systems. The engineer will work with public safety agencies and enterprises, focusing on APCO Project 25 standards and enhancing networks with LTE infrastructure. Responsibilities include system staging, acceptance testing, documentation, and providing technical guidance to project teams.
Must have:
  • Take total responsibility and oversee all technical aspects of assigned projects
  • Provide post-sales technical expertise during installation, implementation and maintenance systems
  • Ensure client’s needs have been met and product/solution is fully functioning to specification
  • Responsible for the complete design of the system from technical roadmap to architectural designs
  • Define appropriate platforms and system specifications
  • Determine infrastructure, capacity planning, storage requirements and networking protocols
  • Develop technical, tactical and strategic plans
  • Final Design and implementation of the radio network
  • Take full ownership of the technical implementation of assigned projects
  • Provide technical guidance to the project management team
  • Provide technical details and solutions to customer requirements
  • Make technical presentations to technical and nontechnical audiences
  • Work with third party vendors to ensure overall quality and technical requirements are met
  • Perform system staging, acceptance testing, radio coverage testing and interference mitigation
  • Handle radio system licensing (FCC/Industry Canada/NTIA)
  • Prepare system Fleetmap, encryption and radio programming templates
  • Complete system documentation and system upgrades
  • Provide subject matter expertise (SME)
  • Mentor and lead junior engineers
  • Bachelor's Degree in wireless, electrical or computer engineering or other technical or engineering field and 4+ years of technical or engineering experience OR 6+ years in communication systems engineering
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. indefinitely
  • Reside in or be willing to relocate to North Carolina or South Carolina
  • Ability to obtain background clearance as required by government customer
  • Travel 25 - 50% for all project phases
Good to have:
  • Pursuing certifications through CompTIA Network+, Juniper JNCIA-Junos, Nokia NRS1, CCNA or similar
  • Knowledge of Juniper, Aviat, Cisco, Nokia/Alcatel, Xtreme
  • Knowledge of switching and routing protocols (OSPF, ISIS, iBGP, eBGP, M-BGP, MPLS RSVP-TE, and LDP)
  • Knowledge in line of sight microwave propagation

NOTE: The candidate must reside in or be relocation to North Carolina or South Carolina.

Overview:

Projects are varied in scope, ranging from a single-site installation for a city police department, to a turnkey statewide public safety communications system costing tens or hundreds of millions of dollars. The team comprises Sales, Project Management and System Engineering personnel working together in a high performance culture, often with demanding cycle times and high customer expectations because we are working on mission critical communication systems.

Take total responsibility and oversee all technical aspects of assigned projects from award until system acceptance.

  • Predominant job responsibilities and requirements occur after the sale of the company’s product to the client.
  • Provides post-sales technical expertise during the installation, implementation and maintenance systems.
  • May be involved in implementing detailed customer installation requirements.
  • Ensures that client’s needs have been met and that the product/solution is fully functioning according to specification.
  • Provide follow-up support to company sales staff and customer personnel by disseminating technical information on specific applications.
  • Responsible for the complete design of the system from technical roadmap to architectural designs.
  • Defines appropriate platforms and system specifications.
  • Determines infrastructure, capacity planning, storage requirements and networking protocols.
  • Develops technical, tactical and strategic plans, systems definition and feasibility determination.
  • Final Design and implementation of the radio network including infrastructure, subscribers, and mobile backhaul.
  • Take full ownership of the technical implementation of the assigned projects.
  • Provide technical guidance to the project management team.
  • Provide technical details and solutions to customer requirements.
  • Make technical presentations to technical and nontechnical audiences including to customers.
  • Work with third party vendors to ensure overall quality and technical requirements are met.
  • System staging (configuration and preparation of equipment for shipment).
  • System acceptance testing.
  • Radio coverage testing and interference mitigation.
  • Radio system licensing (FCC/Industry Canada/NTIA).
  • Preparation of system Fleetmap, encryption and radio programming templates.
  • Complete system documentation.
  • System upgrades.
  • Provide subject matter expertise (SME).
  • Mentor and lead junior engineers.

Specific Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge in radio communication systems, radio propagation, RF, wireless or broadband/LTE.
  • Knowledge of IP networking, network design methodologies & troubleshooting (Ethernet, TCP/IP, L2/L3, MPLS).
  • Experience working with customers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and the ability to present complex topics to nontechnical audiences.
  • Self-motivated and able to maintain focus in a pressured environment.

Preferred Experience:

  • Ideally pursuing certifications through CompTIA Network+, Juniper JNCIA-Junos, Nokia NRS1, CCNA or similar.
