The Data Governance Officer will play a crucial role in establishing, maintaining, and enforcing data governance policies and procedures across the organization. This position is pivotal in ensuring that our data assets are compliant, secure, and understood by all stakeholders, fostering a culture of data excellence and accountability. The Data Governance Officer will drive initiatives related to data compliance, data security, data literacy, audit readiness, and the continuous improvement of our data maturity model.
Responsibilities:
- Data Compliance & Policy Enforcement: Develop, implement, and monitor data governance policies and standards to ensure compliance with internal regulations and external legal frameworks (e.g., GDPR, industry-specific data privacy laws). Collaborate closely with the risk management team to identify, assess, and mitigate data-related risks. Regularly review and update policies to reflect changes in legislation or business needs.
- Data Security Oversight: Collaborate with cybersecurity and IT teams to ensure data security controls are aligned with governance policies, protecting sensitive data from unauthorized access or breaches. Participate in defining data classification standards and access control mechanisms.
- Data Literacy & Training: Design, develop, and implement the framework and strategy for comprehensive data literacy programs and training initiatives. This includes fostering a deeper understanding of data governance principles, various data capabilities (such as data quality, data security, data analytics methodologies, and the effective use of data tools and platforms). Partner closely with data ambassadors and collaborate with specialized data teams to create and deliver relevant training materials, promoting a data driven culture in our organization
- Audit & Risk Management: Prepare for and support internal and external data-related audits, ensuring that data processes and controls are well-documented and auditable. Identify data risks and work with relevant teams to implement mitigation strategies.
- Data Maturity Model Advancement: Contribute to the development and implementation of the organization's data maturity roadmap, assessing current capabilities and driving initiatives to advance data capabilities.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with data owners, data stewards, business leaders, and technical teams to foster collaboration and ensure alignment on data governance initiatives.
- Issue Resolution: Facilitate clear and consistent communication regarding data governance issues, including regular updates, feedback sessions, and issue resolution.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or masters degree in a relevant field (e.g., Business, Information Management, Data Science, Law).
- 3+ years of experience in a data governance, data management, compliance, or audit role, with a focus on data-related subjects.
- Strong understanding of data governance concepts, data management principles, data security frameworks, and relevant regional/global data regulations.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts to diverse audiences.
- Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders at all levels.
- Proven ability to influence and negotiate with stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes.
- Conflict resolution skills.
- Strong understanding and practical experience with metadata management principles and data cataloging tools
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with data governance tools and platforms.
- Familiarity with cloud-based data platforms (e.g., GCP).
- Certifications in data governance (e.g., CDGP), data security (e.g., CISM, CIPP), or audit (e.g., CISA).
- Project management skills.
- Knowledgeable of current law and regulations regarding data, data privacy etc (e.g. GDPR).
- Experience working in a global organization and with diverse cultural environments.
