Job Description

The Director of Employee Relations and Compliance is responsible for overseeing and resolving employee relations cases, acting as a subject matter expert for Human Resource Teams, management, and leadership. This role supervises the Leave of Absence Team and collaborates cross-functionally during investigations to ensure compliance with company policies and labor laws. Responsibilities include developing and implementing employee relations strategies, providing guidance on conflict resolution and disciplinary actions, conducting full-cycle investigations, writing investigation summaries, and providing recommendations for corrective actions. The role also involves overseeing the company's leave of absence processes, evaluating accommodation requests, and collaborating with legal counsel. The director will stay updated on employment trends and regulations, conduct audits, and develop risk mitigation strategies. A proactive and strategic approach to employee relations is expected, leveraging data and metrics to identify themes and trends.

Job Description

The Director of Employee Relations and Compliance oversees and manages the successful resolution of employee relations cases and serves as a trusted advisor and subject matter expert to the Human Resource Teams, management, and leadership across the organization.  This role provides direct supervision and direction for the Leave of Absence Team.  The role collaborates cross-functionally during the investigation process and ensures cases are resolved in accordance with Company policy, and state, federal, and local labor laws.  This role also provides strategic oversight on Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) processes.

  • Develop and implement employee relations strategies to foster a positive and productive work   environment.
  • Provide guidance and support to leaders and Team Members on employee relations issues, including conflict resolution, disciplinary actions, and performance management.
  • Conduct full-cycle employee relations investigation from intake to resolution/closure, including but not limited to investigations related to team member conduct, agency complaints, discovery requests and policy violations.
  • Write and summarize employee relations investigations, including compiling and maintaining investigation files. 
  • Provide guidance on the interpretation and administration of company policies and procedures. If the outcome of an investigation results in a finding, provide guidance and recommendations on corrective actions up to and including termination where appropriate, in line with company policies and values.
  • Implement standardized operating procedures for handling and documenting employee relations issues, ensuring consistency and fairness.
  • Demonstrate a proactive, strategic approach to employee relations by identifying and analyzing, and sharing ER data/metrics for themes, trends, and root cause identification.
  • Facilitate effective partnerships with HR Business Partners, leadership, Legal, and Security to address issues holistically and proactively. 
  • Recommend solutions to issues, counsels team members, advises managers on discipline process and facilitates dispute resolution.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and review of policies and procedures to ensure organizational effectiveness and compliance.
  • Stay abreast of employment trends and changing regulations that may impact Company policy.
  • Conduct audits and develop risk mitigation strategies for appropriate stakeholders.
  • Oversee the Company’s leave of absence processes, including supervision of the Leave of Absence Team.
  • Evaluate requests for workplace accommodations, including religious and ADA accommodations. 
  • Collaborate with legal counsel in the preparation of responsive documentation for litigation as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience

  • 10+ years employee relations experience with relevant experience as a human resources business partner /leader.
  • 7+ years of demonstrated experience conducting investigations and managing complex employee relations situations including investigations, conflict resolution, and policy interpretation.
  • Experience in the hospitality industry or other highly customer-centric sectors (e.g., retail, travel, or healthcare) is strongly preferred
  • Experience writing policies and standard operating procedures. 


Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, or a  related field.  highly preferred; equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience will be considered.
  • HRCI or SHRM certifications strongly preferred.


Skills/Knowledge

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) is strongly preferred. 
  • Professional demeanor and presence required.

Travel Requirements

  • Travel may be required as needed to conduct onsite investigations.
