Nine is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Consumer Platform team in building a new Integrated Audience Platform. This platform will centralize essential functions like subscriptions, billing, payments, and SSO to support Nine's consumer products and drive digital subscriptions and revenue growth. The role involves enabling the team by providing technical solutions, removing roadblocks, and maintaining high-quality software engineering practices. Responsibilities also include providing technical leadership, driving adoption of best practices, ensuring cross-skilling, and fostering a high-performance team environment through feedback, coaching, and mentoring. The manager will communicate business vision and goals to the team and participate in hiring and HR processes.
Must have:
  • Proven technical team leadership
  • People management experience
  • Extensive web/software development experience
  • Strong technical knowledge (e.g., Go, JavaScript, NodeJS, GraphQL, Cloud)
  • Experience with high-availability, high-volume digital products
  • Skills in creating high-performing teams
  • Agile development best practices (Scrum, Lean)
  • Excellent communication skills

The Nine Product and Technology team build and maintain some of the most highly respected consumer applications and websites in Australia, including The Sydney Morning Herald, Stan, The Age, The Australian Financial Review and 9Now, as well as their content management systems, services and middleware.

Job Description

The Consumer Platform team is a newly formed portfolio within Nine Product and Technology. It sits at the heart of the Consumer Group and its main objective is to build Nine’s new Integrated Audience Platform. This new platform will support Nine’s suite of consumer products and centralises essential functions such as subscriptions, billing, payments, SSO, and marketing communications. This will ultimately give Nine the ability to harness its wealth of unique content and customer data to drive digital subscriptions and revenue growth for the Nine group.

Responsibilities:

Enabling your team

  • Work with Product teams and stakeholders to provide technical solutions to problems or issues

  • Act as an enabler, removing roadblocks to progress as needed

  • Maintain high quality standards for yourself and the software engineering practices of your team

  • Work with team members to guide solutions towards business and technology goals

Technical Leadership

  • Drive adoption of best practices and best-in class technology

  • Remove single points of failure by cross-skilling staff and making sensible, strategic resourcing decisions

Drive high performance

  • Provide one on one feedback, career advice and coaching for your team members

  • Communicate openly and be the voice of the business within your team, keeping them informed of and working towards the business vision & goals

  • Participate in hiring and other HR processes affecting your team where needed

  • Mentor team members to create a highly motivated, coherent, and cohesive culture which rewards high performance

  • Drive the continuous improvement of processes and ways of work to improve team capacity and capability

Qualifications

  • Proven leadership in technical teams and people management 

  • Extensive proven experience in web and software development

  • Strong technical knowledge and hands-on development capability in relevant technologies. (e.g. Go, JavaScript, NodeJS, GraphQL, Cloud infrastructure or others as required by the squad)

  • Experience running a team responsible for high availability, high volume digital products

  • Proven skills creating a high performing team environment

  • Managing yourself and your team in a fast changing environment with competing priorities

  • A strong understanding of agile development best practices including Scrum and Lean methodologies

  • Excellent communication skills
