Grooming Artist

Job Summary
The Groom Artist is responsible for creating high-quality hair, fur, and feather grooms for characters and creatures, ensuring they meet artistic and technical specifications for visual effects projects. This role requires a strong eye for detail, technical proficiency, and the ability to work collaboratively within a production pipeline. Key responsibilities include integrating grooms with other departments, troubleshooting technical issues, optimizing performance, and maintaining high quality standards.
Must Have
- Create photo-real hair, fur, and feather grooms for digital doubles and creatures.
- Work closely with modeling, surfacing, rigging, and CFX departments to ensure seamless integration of grooms into the pipeline.
- Implement improvements and changes based on review feedback from supervisors and leads.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to grooming, including simulation, texturing, rendering, and integration.
- Optimize grooms for performance and memory efficiency without compromising visual fidelity.
- Maintain a high standard of quality and consistency across all groom assets in the project.
- Work independently on defined tasks while collaborating with other artists and supervisors during the look development process.
- Adhere to project deadlines and technical specifications.
- Learn and adapt to new workflows and methods quickly.
- Completes assigned tasks in a timely manner.
- Working knowledge of industry-standard grooming software, Houdini, is required.
- Strong understanding of hair, fur, and feather anatomy, physics, and rendering principles.
- Demonstrable experience with character rigging, modeling, and texturing workflows as they relate to grooming.
- Excellent artistic eye for detail, form, and realism.
- Excellent technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Eye for detail and able to QA their own work to ensure the highest quality before assets handoff.
- Excellent time management and prioritization skills; experience working under tight deadlines.
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision as well as a team player.
- A clear understanding of color space, shading, lighting, and rendering methodologies.
Good to Have
- Bachelor's Degree/Diploma in Digital Arts or equivalent experience (preferred).
- Experience working on creatures, digital doubles, topology, and blend shapes (preferred).
- Experience with Nuke/Mari/V-Ray/3dsMax is a plus.
- Familiarity with scripting languages (Python, VEX) is a plus.
- Experience with character simulation is a plus.
