Job Summary
The Head of Health, Safety, and Security at Stord will build and lead an enterprise-wide program protecting people, assets, and operations across a multi-site 3PL and fulfillment network. This role encompasses occupational safety, physical security, incident response, and regulatory compliance, ensuring safety and security are integrated into daily operations, peak execution, and network expansion.
Must Have
- Own and govern the Health, Safety, and Security program across all facilities.
- Design and maintain a safety management system aligned with OSHA and ISO 45001 principles.
- Establish physical security standards for facilities, including access control and CCTV.
- Develop and maintain incident response playbooks for various events.
- Oversee compliance with Hazmat regulations (DOT, OSHA, EPA) and industry certifications (GMP, GDP).
- Manage safety and security KPIs, focusing on leading indicators and continuous improvement.
- Develop scalable safety and security training programs.
- Support new site launches, peak planning, and automation integration.
- 10+ years of experience in safety, security, or operations leadership, with multi-site 3PL/eCommerce experience.
- Deep working knowledge of OSHA regulations and ISO 45001 frameworks.
- Strong incident investigation and root cause analysis capabilities.
- Familiarity with physical security systems and loss prevention.
Good to Have
- CSP, ASP, or equivalent safety certification.
- Lean, Six Sigma, or Continuous Improvement background.
- Experience supporting TAPA, CTPAT, or SOC-related controls.
Job Description
Role Overview
The Head of Health, Safety, and Security is responsible for building and leading a scalable, enterprise-wide program that protects people, assets, and operations across a multi-site 3PL and fulfillment network. This role owns occupational safety, physical security, incident response, and regulatory compliance while embedding safety and security into daily operating routines, peak execution, automation launches, and network expansion. The Head of HSS will establish standards, enable operators, and drive accountability to ensure safety and security are operational disciplines, not compliance exercises.
Key Responsibilities
Program Ownership and Governance
- Own the Health, Safety, and Security program across all facilities.
- Establish governance, escalation paths, and decision rights.
- Lead a cross-functional Safety and Security Steering Committee.
- Define minimum standards, acceptable risk thresholds, and non-negotiables.
Occupational Health and Safety
- Design and maintain a safety management system aligned with OSHA and ISO 45001–based principles.
- Own policies and standards for:
- Material handling equipment and PIT programs
- Automation and conveyance safety
- Lockout tagout
- Ergonomics and injury prevention
- PPE
- Contractor and temporary labor safety
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
- Ensure timely and accurate OSHA reporting and regulatory interactions.
Physical Security and Asset Protection
- Establish physical security standards for facilities, including:
- Access control and visitor management
- CCTV coverage, placement, and retention
- Yard and perimeter security
- High-value inventory protection
- Lead security risk assessments and loss prevention initiatives.
- Partner with Legal and HR on workplace violence prevention and response.
- Support customer and industry requirements such as TAPA, CTPAT, and SOC-aligned controls where applicable.
Incident Response and Crisis Management
- Develop and maintain incident response playbooks for:
- Injuries and medical events
- Property damage and equipment incidents
- Theft and security breaches
- Active threat situations
- Severe weather and operational disruptions
- Serve as a senior leader during significant incidents and investigations.
- Coordinate with emergency responders, insurers, and internal stakeholders.
- Drive post-incident reviews and corrective actions.
Regulatory Compliance, Hazmat, and Certifications
- Own and oversee compliance with applicable Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) regulations, including DOT, OSHA, EPA, and state-specific requirements relevant to warehouse, fulfillment, and transportation operations.
- Establish standards and training for Hazmat handling, storage, labeling, spill response, and incident reporting, including oversight of third-party vendors and contractors where applicable.
- Partner with Operations, Engineering, and Facilities to ensure Hazmat requirements are integrated into facility design, automation, and material flow.
- Lead readiness and ongoing compliance for customer and industry certifications such as GMP, GDP, and other regulated operating standards as required by customer profiles.
- Coordinate internal audits, corrective action plans, and external inspections related to Hazmat and regulated certifications.
- Serve as the primary escalation point for Hazmat incidents, regulatory inquiries, and certification-related nonconformances.
Metrics, Reporting, and Continuous Improvement
- Own safety and security KPIs and dashboards, including:
- TRIR, DART, and lost time
- Near-miss reporting rates
- Corrective action closure timelines
- Security incidents per site or per unit
- Shift focus toward leading indicators and proactive risk identification.
- Partner with Ops Excellence and Industrial Engineering to reduce systemic risk.
- Ensure sites are audit-ready at all times.
Training, Culture, and Capability Building
- Develop scalable safety and security training for leaders, associates, and contractors.
- Build and support a network of site-level safety champions embedded in operations.
- Reinforce a speak-up, no-retaliation culture for safety and security concerns.
- Embed safety and security expectations into leadership routines and standard work.
Network Growth, Peak, and Automation Support
- Support new site launches, peak planning, and major operational changes.
- Partner with Network Innovation and Engineering to:
- Review automation designs and layouts
- Approve safety controls and safeguards
- Support commissioning and go-live readiness
- Ensure safety and security standards scale with volume, labor, and automation.
Required Qualifications
Experience
- 10+ years of experience in safety, security, or operations leadership.
- Multi-site experience in 3PL, eCommerce fulfillment, parcel, logistics, or manufacturing environments.
- Proven ability to operate in high-volume, labor-intensive settings with automation.
Technical Expertise
- Deep working knowledge of OSHA regulations and compliance.
- Experience implementing or operating within ISO 45001 or equivalent frameworks.
- Strong incident investigation and root cause analysis capability.
- Familiarity with physical security systems and loss prevention practices.
- Experience with contractor safety, temp labor, and peak operations.
Credentials (Preferred)
- CSP, ASP, or equivalent safety certification.
- Lean, Six Sigma, or CI background preferred.
- Experience supporting TAPA, CTPAT, or SOC-related controls a plus.
