Intern - Industrial Design - Plymouth, MN - Summer 2026

Job Description

Intern - Industrial Design - Plymouth, MN (Greater Minneapolis) - Summer 2026

Are you interested in a summer internship with Philips Experience Design? Join us for a paid 3-month opportunity at Philips Image-Guided Therapy Devices, where we welcome ambitious Industrial Design students currently pursuing a degree (BID, BFA, BS). Based in Minnesota’s Medical Alley, the heart of health innovation and care, Philips IGTD offers an inspiring environment to advance your healthcare design career.

Your Role

As an Industrial Design intern, you will collaborate with our award-winning global design team to innovate medical devices for cath labs. By empathizing with interventional teams, you will transform their end-to-end workflow needs into visual storyboards, desirable product design concepts, and ergonomic 3D prototypes that prioritize patient safety. Your eagerness to learn will ensure you incorporate feedback from design reviews and align your deliverables with Philips Product Design Language principles. Areas of work:

  • Human-Centered: Empathize with healthcare professionals to develop user personas and uncover unmet needs. Craft visual storyboards illustrating medical device interactions during clinical procedures. Participate in observational research and co-creation workshops to shape impactful healthcare design solutions.
  • Design: Rapidly visualize concepts in weekly sketch sessions. Use Solidworks / Rhino for 3D modeling and Keyshot Network Rendering to develop high-quality visuals or animations. Create compelling design concept presentations and inspire with non-healthcare design trends. Apply Philips Product Design Language principles to drive consistency in form, color, and branding across our IGTD hardware portfolio.
  • 3D Prototyping: Transform design concepts into detailed CAD models for low-to-high fidelity prototyping in our Experience Design Lab. Utilize Formlabs 3D printers to create physical mockups for both internal design reviews and external usability testing. Iterate and refine prototypes based on testing feedback, guiding the product design’s evolution.

You’re the right fit if:

  • You are pursuing an Industrial Design degree (BID, BFA, BS) and are motivated to launch your healthcare design career in Minnesota’s Medical Alley.
  • Only candidates with an Industrial Design portfolio will be considered for this position, please add your portfolio (website link or PDF document) to your application.
  • You empathize with healthcare professionals and, as a clear communicator, transform insights into patient-safe design concepts.
  • You thrive in collaborative settings, contributing to team sketching sessions and integrating design review feedback to align with Philips Product Design Language principles.
  • You possess strong skills in 3D modeling and rendering, using digital tools like Solidworks / Rhino, and Keyshot to visualize concepts.
  • You must be able to successfully perform the following minimum Physical, Cognitive and Environmental job requirements with or without accommodation for this position.
