Job Description

This internship at Thales' Elancourt site, a center of technological excellence, is within the Servomechanisms & Control Systems (SSA) department. SSA develops functionalities for servo-controlled mechanisms, stabilization, and line-of-sight kinematics across product lines. The role involves improving existing architectures by replacing stepper motors with DC motors for an infrared camera's zoom mechanism. The intern will take charge of existing and alternative solutions, adapt an application for control, develop HwIL applications, integrate and validate with a prototype, and conduct product environment tests.
Must Have:
  • Student engineer specializing in automation and electronics, seeking a 6-month end-of-study internship.
  • Proficiency in Matlab and Simulink.
  • Solid knowledge in automation, embedded systems, and electronics.
  • Recognized for autonomy, synthesis capability, rigor, critical and analytical thinking.
Perks:
  • Technological expertise.
  • Focus on employee work-life balance.
  • Inclusive and benevolent environment.
  • Recognized societal and environmental commitment (Thales Solidarity, CAC 40 ESG index).
  • All internships are contractual and remunerated based on study level.
  • Thales, a Handi-Engaged company, recognizes all talents; diversity is our best asset.

Build a future of trust together

Thales is a global high-tech leader specializing in three sectors: Defense & Security, Aerospace & Space, and Cyber & Digital. It develops products and solutions that contribute to a safer, more environmentally friendly, and more inclusive world. The Group invests nearly 4 billion euros per year in Research & Development, particularly in key innovation areas such as AI, cybersecurity, quantum, cloud technologies, and 6G. Thales has nearly 81,000 employees in 68 countries.

Our commitments, your benefits

  • Our technological expertise
  • Our focus on employee work-life balance
  • An inclusive and benevolent environment
  • Recognized societal and environmental commitment (Thales Solidarity, CAC 40 ESG index…)

Your daily life

At the heart of Saint Quentin en Yvelines, the Elancourt site is one of Thales' most important technological centers of excellence. The diversity and technicality of the systems and equipment mobilize expertise in more than 80 professions in defense, high-tech security, and digital services solutions.

The Servomechanisms & Control Systems (SSA) Department brings together the skills and resources necessary for the development of functionalities related to control systems for all Elancourt product lines: servo-controlled mechanisms, stabilization and line-of-sight kinematics, line-of-sight attitude calculations, and georeferencing. As such, SSA intervenes throughout the product life cycle: from architecture and sizing, through development and integration, to expertise in production and operational maintenance.

Our department also focuses on improving existing architectures, to take into account state-of-the-art technologies, standardize across projects, and incorporate feedback from production. It is in this context that we are studying the replacement of stepper motors used on the zoom mechanism of an infrared camera with DC motors equipped with encoders. Stepper technology has historically been used on this type of product, but it is now reaching its limits. A replacement solution in the form of a prototype is under study, involving integration activities, application development, and validation in a product environment.

Specifically, you will be working on the following missions:

  • Taking ownership of the existing solution, the proposed alternative solution, and its specifications.
  • Studying an existing application with a view to adapting it to control the alternative solution.
  • Taking ownership of the prototype and its environment.
  • Developing the application in HwIL (Hardware In the Loop) mode, particularly the control system.
  • Integrating and validating the application with the prototype.
  • Additional tests in a product environment.
