Lead teams in developing next-generation evaluation systems for machine learning and artificial intelligence, focusing on quality and safety. Drive innovation in automated evaluation, particularly for language models and generative AI, by combining human and machine intelligence. Must have:
  • Lead R&D in automated AI evaluation, including LLM-based assessment systems
  • Drive research and implementation of novel approaches to measure and improve AI system quality, safety, and alignment
  • Build and scale evaluation infrastructure combining human expertise with ML-powered automation
  • Work with cross-functional partners to integrate evaluation systems into production workflows
  • Master’s degree with 4+ years of industry experience, or PhD with 3+ years
  • 3+ years experience developing ML evaluation systems
  • 2+ years leading technical teams in ML/AI
  • Strong technical leadership and communication skills

Job Details

Help us transform how machine learning and artificial intelligence systems are evaluated for quality and safety. You will lead teams building next-generation evaluation systems that combine human and machine intelligence to assess AI models at scale. We are looking for a research manager with deep expertise in applied AI/ML who will drive innovation in automated evaluation, particularly for language models and generative AI systems.

This role leads multifunctional teams developing groundbreaking approaches to AI assessment, including automated evaluation systems. You'll work with ML researchers, engineers, and domain experts to pioneer new methods for scalable, high-quality AI evaluation. We are looking for an outstanding, hands-on manager who will thrive in a fast-paced environment. We believe the most exciting problems in machine learning research arise at the intersection with real-world use cases, and this is also where the most critical breakthroughs come from.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead R&D in automated AI evaluation, including development of LLM-based assessment systems that can reliably evaluate model outputs
  • Drive research and implementation of novel approaches to measure and improve AI system quality, safety, and alignment
  • Build and scale evaluation infrastructure that combines human expertise with ML-powered automation
  • Work with cross-functional partners to integrate evaluation systems into production workflows
  • Master’s degree with 4+ years of industry experience, or PhD with 3+ years, or equivalent work experience
  • 3+ years experience developing ML evaluation systems
  • 2+ years leading technical teams in ML/AI
  • Strong technical leadership and communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $201,300 and $302,200, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple’s discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple’s Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
