Job Description

As a Motion Lead in Yahoo's Marketing Studio, you will define and elevate motion design quality across Yahoo's product suite, including News, Mail, Sports, and Finance. Reporting to the Head of the Marketing Studio, you will collaborate with team leads to implement a cohesive motion design strategy across various marketing channels like digital, social media, and events. This leadership role involves guiding a team of motion designers, managing agency partnerships, and ensuring creative output aligns with Yahoo’s brand vision. You will drive innovation, incorporate emerging technologies, and contribute to brainstorming, using storyboarding and concept development to align motion strategies with business goals.

  • Define and lead the motion design vision for Yahoo’s marketing efforts.
  • Collaborate closely with internal teams (Performance, Events, Experiential) to align motion design strategies.

  • Lead, mentor, and inspire the motion design team.
  • Lead brainstorming sessions, storyboarding, and concept development.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends and leverage cutting-edge motion design techniques.

  • Oversee the production of motion design assets from concept through execution.
  • Be ready to get hands-on with design when necessary.
  • 10+ years of experience in motion design with a strong portfolio.
  • Expertise in short-form social videos, gifs, and other motion design formats for digital and social platforms.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (After Effects, Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator).
  • Expertise in motion design principles, animation, video editing, and storytelling techniques.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills, with experience managing teams and external agency partners.
  • Proven experience managing multiple high-priority projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to stay current with motion design trends, particularly those emerging from social platforms.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to actively participate in creative brainstorming sessions, storyboarding, and concept development.
  • Must be a strategic leader who understands motion design as an integral part of holistic design solutions.
  • A strong point of view and the ability to advocate for motion design’s role in shaping a brand narrative.

Position Summary

As the Motion Lead within our Marketing Studio, you will play a pivotal role in elevating motion design quality across all of Yahoo’s suite of products, including News, Mail, Sports, Finance, and beyond. Reporting to the Head of the Marketing Studio, you will collaborate closely with team leads from Performance, Events, and Experiential to craft and implement a cohesive motion design strategy that spans Yahoo's diverse portfolio.

Your role encompasses a wide range of marketing channels, from digital and social media to events, ensuring the delivery of dynamic, compelling visuals that strengthen Yahoo’s brand presence. This leadership position involves guiding a team of motion designers and managing external agency partnerships, ensuring all creative output aligns with Yahoo’s vision and maintains a consistent brand identity across all initiatives.

Your expertise in motion design will be instrumental in driving innovation, incorporating emerging technologies, and delivering impactful content that differentiates Yahoo in the market. You will actively contribute to brainstorming sessions, bringing a unique perspective to the creative process. By collaborating across teams, you’ll ensure motion design remains a central component in shaping the direction of Yahoo’s marketing efforts. Storyboarding and concept development will be key tools in effectively communicating ideas and aligning motion strategies with both creative and business goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Vision: Define and lead the motion design vision for Yahoo’s marketing efforts, ensuring consistency, innovation, and excellence in motion assets across all channels and products.
  • Collaboration & Partnership: Work closely with internal teams (Performance, Events, Experiential, etc.) to align motion design strategies with overall marketing objectives. Build and maintain strong relationships across departments to ensure cohesive, high-quality projects.
  • Agency Management: Oversee external agency partners as they collaborate with internal teams, ensuring their work aligns with Yahoo’s creative vision, brand guidelines, and quality standards.
  • Team Guidance & Mentorship: Lead, mentor, and inspire the motion design team, providing creative direction, feedback, and professional development opportunities to foster growth and excellence.
  • Strategic & Creative Direction: Lead brainstorming sessions, storyboarding, and concept development to establish motion design strategies that align with Yahoo’s goals and elevate brand storytelling.
  • Trend Integration & Innovation: Stay ahead of industry trends, particularly in social media, and leverage cutting-edge motion design techniques, tools, and technologies to continuously push creative boundaries and set Yahoo’s marketing campaigns apart.
  • Brand Stewardship: Uphold Yahoo’s brand guidelines in all motion design work, ensuring consistency and relevance in visual storytelling across all platforms.
  • Project Oversight: Oversee the production of motion design assets from concept through execution, ensuring deliverables meet project goals, deadlines, and quality standards
  • Hands-On Design: Be ready to roll up your sleeves and get hands-on with design when necessary, contributing to the creation of motion assets and providing direct input in key projects.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in motion design, with a portfolio showcasing creativity, strategic thinking, and high-quality execution across various media and marketing channels.
  • Expertise in short-form social videos, gifs, and other motion design formats for digital and social platforms.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (After Effects, Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator) and other motion design tools. HTML5 a plus.
  • Expertise in motion design principles, animation, video editing, and storytelling techniques, with the ability to elevate brand messaging.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills, with experience managing teams and external agency partners.
  • Proven experience managing multiple high-priority projects simultaneously, delivering top-tier work within scope and deadlines.
  • Ability to stay current with motion design trends, particularly those emerging from social platforms, and apply them to enhance Yahoo’s marketing efforts.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills, combined with a passion for visual storytelling and innovation.

The compensation for this position ranges from $110,625.00 - $230,625.00/yr and will vary depending on factors such as your location, skills and experience.The compensation package may also include incentive compensation opportunities in the form of discretionary annual bonus or commissions.
