Job Description

The Principal Staff Engineer will be responsible for the public safety design and implementation of solutions for Motorola’s ASTRO 25 and adjacent technologies for State and Local government agencies. This role involves leading technical aspects of assigned projects, including radio network design and implementation, customer interaction, system buildout, configuration, acceptance testing, radio coverage testing, and system documentation. The engineer will work with a field team to deliver mission-critical communication systems, ensuring customer satisfaction and building trusted advisor relationships.
Good To Have:
  • Experience with Motorola ASTRO 25 architecture.
  • Knowledge with point-to-point Microwave systems, Microwave RF & Network design, FCC licensing.
  • Certifications through CompTIA Network+, Juniper JNCIA-Junos, Nokia NRS1, CCNA or similar.
Must Have:
  • Design and implement public safety solutions for Motorola’s ASTRO 25 and adjacent technologies.
  • Lead technical aspects of assigned projects until system acceptance.
  • Design and implement radio networks including infrastructure, subscribers, mobile backhaul, WAN, and CEN networks.
  • Interact with customers and consultants for design reviews, staging, and acceptance testing.
  • Perform system buildout, configuration, and acceptance testing in lab and field environments.
  • Conduct radio coverage testing, frequency analysis, and interference mitigation.
  • Manage radio system licensing (FCC/Industry Canada/NTIA).
  • Prepare system fleet map, encryption, and radio programming templates.
  • Complete system documentation.
  • Execute live system cutovers and upgrades.
  • Possess a Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering or technical discipline with 6+ years of experience, or 8 years of engineering or technical experience.
  • Have legal authorization to work in the U.S. indefinitely.

With the growth of data services some of our customer’s mobile wireless networks are being enhanced with LTE infrastructure for applications such as APX Next Smart and live mobile video transmission supplementing our traditional core voice and narrowband data networks.

Job Description

The Principal Staff Engineer will be responsible for the public safety design and implementation of solutions for Motorola’s ASTRO 25 and adjacent technologies for State and Local government agencies. We are looking for Engineers who are energized by delivering solutions that truly make a difference.

Responsibilities:

The Principal Staff Engineer will work with a field team of Project Management, Systems Engineers, System Technologists, Construction Managers, and Customer Service Managers, and will be responsible for leading technical aspects of the assigned project until system acceptance.

This involves:

  • Design and implementation of the radio network including infrastructure, subscribers, mobile backhaul and WAN and CEN networks.
  • High level of customer and consultant interaction involving customer design reviews, customer witnessed staging and acceptance testing events, coverage acceptance testing, live system upgrades, and troubleshooting efforts.
  • System buildout, configuration and acceptance testing in both lab staging and field environments
  • Radio coverage testing, frequency analysis and interference mitigation
  • Radio system licensing (FCC/Industry Canada/NTIA)
  • Preparation of system fleet map, encryption and radio programming templates
  • Complete system documentation
  • Live system cutovers and upgrades

Additional Skills/Knowledge:

  • Radio Frequency Engineering principles
  • Land / Mobile Radio Engineering principles
  • RFDS principles to include antenna and cable selection, transmit combiners, receive multi-couplers, and lightning protection systems.
  • P25 Land Mobile Radio terminology and two-way subscriber radio provisioning methods.
  • Experience with Motorola ASTRO 25 architecture a plus.
  • Servers and related systems to include: VMware ESXI, Linux, and Microsoft operating systems.
  • Construction of remote communication sites to include: site selection, grounding, compound development, tower and shelter requirements.
  • Fortinet firewalls, Nokia 7705 series routers, Juniper SRX/MX (Junos) series routers, HP/Aruba switches
  • Remote access using SSH, SCP, SFTP, RDP
  • Knowledge with point-to-point Microwave systems, Microwave RF & Network design, FCC licensing a plus
  • Software applications integration, Application Protocol Interfaces (API) concepts, computer operating systems, and the OSI model.
  • Networking protocols and devices including OSPF, ISIS, BGP, MPLS, SIP, RTP, SNMP, NAT, routers, switches, and stateful packet firewalls.
  • Knowledge of physical layer such as fiber, copper, and microwave.
  • Certifications a plus through CompTIA Network+, Juniper JNCIA-Junos, Nokia NRS1, CCNA or similar a plus.
  • Works collaboratively and builds relationships with other colleagues, customers, and third party service professionals.
  • Self-motivated, good written and oral communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills

Target Base Salary Range: $120,000 - $135,000 USD

Consistent with Motorola Solutions values and applicable law, we provide the following information to promote pay transparency and equity. Pay within this range varies and depends on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The actual offer will be based on the individual candidate.
