Job Summary

This Project Cost Controller position at Thales in Ottawa, Canada, is a fixed-term, hybrid, full-time role. The successful candidate will provide financial support to project teams, representing Finance within the PMO organization. Key responsibilities include cost control, billing, and project financial management, ensuring compliance with company policy. The role involves developing project budgets, maintaining financial forecasts in Primavera, preparing monthly re-forecasting for sales, gross margin, and cash-in, and monitoring project cash flow. The controller also produces monthly project reports, supports business control processes, and assists with project pricing and timely billing.

Must Have

  • Provide financial support to the project(s) team(s).
  • Represent Finance within the PMO organization and support Project Management for economical, finance and administrative tasks.
  • Perform cost control, billing, and project financial management function.
  • Compile Thales accounting & internal control process and deliver on time with reliable and documented information and reports.
  • Responsible for cost control and ensures that it is in conformance with company’s policy.
  • Develop and prepares project budget and contract changes.
  • Maintain financial budget and Estimate At Completion in Primavera.
  • Prepare and validate monthly re-forecasting of Sales, Gross Margin, Cost Variance, Adjusted Gross Margin and Cash-in.
  • Monitor Project Cash and liaise with the Company’s Treasurer on project cash flow, foreign exchange exposure, hedging activities and customer cash collection.
  • Produce monthly project report (Dashboard) and forecasts data package with major risks and opportunities identified.
  • Support Business Control Manager in the monthly Project Control Group processes.
  • Prepare project pricing and supports internal pricing specialist on bids.
  • Support and provide timely project billing.
  • Work on establishing overarching global project processes for improved monitoring and control.
  • Perform special project assignments as requested.
  • Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Arts (major in accounting), and/or similar education and equivalent experience.
  • 1-3 years of experience in large multi-national or national organizations, in the Defense & Security sector or previous experience in project cost controlling.
  • Experience working on projects and knowledge of basic project management and the project lifecycle.
  • Knowledge and previous experience working with different business systems and tools (i.e. SAP, Primavera and Excel).

Position Summary

  • To provide financial support to the project(s) team(s).
  • To represent Finance within the PMO organization and support Project Management for economical, finance and administrative tasks.

  • To compile Thales accounting & internal control process and deliver on time with reliable and documented information and reports.

Regulatory Compliance Requirement

This position requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software or technical information controlled under the Canadian Export Control List and/or the US the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). All applicants must be eligible or able to obtain authorization for such access.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Responsible for cost control and ensures that it is in conformance with company’s policy.
  • Develop and prepares project budget and contract changes.
  • In collaboration with PMO, maintains financial budget and Estimate At Completion in Primavera; Validates jointly with Project Management Office and Finance Manager to resolve any inconsistency and Estimate at Completion changes.
  • Prepares, validates with Project Manager the monthly re-forecasting of Sales, Gross Margin, Cost Variance, Adjusted Gross Margin and Cash-in and ensures that the information is in time to be integrated on the monthly Company Operational Budget Review (OBR).
  • Project Cash monitoring and liaises with the Company’s Treasurer on project cash flow, foreign exchange exposure, hedging activities and customer cash collection.
  • Produces monthly project report (Dashboard) and forecasts data package with major risks and opportunities identified. Of which main tasks are: Actual cost validation, Commitment cost validation, Estimate to Complete (ETC) validation and control check; Produces external weekly and monthly reporting as required, monitoring actuals and budgets; Produces external task forecasts of project burn-rate for level of effort contracts as required.
  • Supports Business Control Manager in the monthly Project Control Group processes – Timesheet Admin, monthly programmatic consolidation of all projects, financial analysis.; Prepares project pricing and supports internal pricing specialist on bids; Supports and provides timely project billing.
  • Works on establishing overarching global project processes for improved monitoring and control.
  • Performs special project assignments as requested.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Arts (major in accounting), and/or similar education and equivalent experience
  • 1-3 years of experience in large multi-national or national organizations, in the Defense & Security sector or previous experience in project cost controlling
  • Experience working on projects and knowledge of basic project management and the project lifecycle.
  • Knowledge and previous experience working with different business systems and tools (i.e. SAP, Primavera and Excel)

Special Position Requirements

  • Schedule: 40 hours per week. Hybrid position – a mix of working from home.
  • Travel: Occasional domestic.

The reference Total Target Compensation (TTC) market range for this position, inclusive of annual base salary and the variable compensation target, is between Total Target Cash (TTC) 50, 000 – 73,000 -97,000 CAD Annual.

This reflects how companies in a similar industry and geographic region generally pay for similar jobs. This range helps the Company make pay decisions as one data point among many. Where a position falls within this range is also dependent on other factors including – but not limited to – the employee’s career path history, competencies, skills and performance, as well as the company’s annual salary budget, the customer’s program requirements, and the company’s internal equity.
