Job Summary

The Senior Digital Matte Painting Artist / Environment Artist creates concept art and high-quality 2D and 3D environments for live-action VFX projects. This role involves visual development, defining the look, feel, and atmosphere of scenes. It requires artistic and technical expertise to deliver photorealistic assets and concept artwork, supporting creative direction and production workflows. Coordination with the Environment Lead, CG Supervisor, and Compositing teams ensures visual consistency and seamless integration of elements.

Must Have

  • Produce concept art and 2D/2.5D matte paintings for live-action/CG.
  • Develop visual references and concept artwork for creative direction.
  • Collaborate with Environment, CG, and Compositing teams for visual continuity.
  • Implement innovative techniques, tools, and AI-assisted workflows.
  • Review and provide feedback on environment work.
  • Stay updated on industry tools, techniques, and best practices.
  • Minimum 3 years experience as Digital Matte Painter or Environment Artist in VFX.
  • Strong artistic skills, appreciation for landscape and natural processes.
  • Expertise in composition, lighting, perspective, and color theory.
  • Proficiency with Photoshop and 3D software (Maya, Houdini, Blender).
  • Experience with projection techniques and camera setups.
  • Working knowledge of compositing packages (Nuke).
  • Ability to manage multiple complex tasks and deadlines.
  • Strong communication and collaborative work approach.
  • Reside in Ontario and be legally eligible to work in Canada.

Good to Have

  • Knowledge of Unreal Engine
  • AI-based environment or image generation techniques

The Senior Digital Matte Painting Artist / Environment Artist is responsible for creating concept art and high-quality 2D and 3D environments for live-action VFX projects. This role contributes to the visual development of environments, defining the look, feel, and atmosphere of scenes prior to production. The position requires a combination of artistic and technical expertise to deliver photorealistic assets and concept artwork that support creative direction and production workflows. Coordination with the Environment Lead, CG Supervisor, and Compositing teams ensures visual consistency and seamless integration of all elements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce concept art and complex 2D/2.5D matte paintings for live-action and CG integration.
  • Develop visual references and concept artwork to guide creative direction and environment production.
  • Collaborate with the Environment Lead, CG, and Compositing teams to maintain visual continuity, technical efficiency, and high production standards.
  • Suggest and implement innovative techniques, tools, and AI-assisted workflows to optimize environment production.
  • Review and provide feedback on environment work to ensure it meets creative and technical requirements.
  • Stay updated on industry tools, techniques, and best practices, and apply knowledge to improve production workflows.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Digital Matte Painter or Environment Artist for live-action feature film or episodic VFX.
  • Strong artistic skills with an appreciation for landscape and natural processes, and proven ability to create compelling concept art, including expertise in composition, lighting, perspective, and color theory.
  • Proficiency with Photoshop and 3D software such as Maya, Houdini, or Blender.
  • Experience with projection techniques and camera setups.
  • Working knowledge of compositing packages (preferably Nuke).
  • Knowledge of Unreal Engine and AI-based environment or image generation techniques is a plus.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex tasks and deadlines while maintaining high-quality results.
  • Strong communication skills and collaborative work approach.
