This role involves being a technical expert for the global team, focused on developing applications within a strategic technology platform. Responsibilities include providing hands-on technical expertise, working in cross-functional teams, designing core software components, identifying areas for improvement in the development process, being a change agent with cloud-native architecture, collaborating with teams to develop new product opportunities, staying updated on emerging technologies, and ensuring adherence to standards and best practices. The candidate will also translate business needs into technical solutions and shape a critical technology initiative, working with other senior engineers.
Must have:
  • 5+ years of experience delivering scalable digital products.
  • Understanding of design patterns and applicability to use cases.
  • Core Java development experience, familiar with Java 17 and higher.
  • Hands-on experience in Java back-end development.
  • Experience in Microservices design and best practices.
  • Expertise in designing, developing, and maintaining RESTful APIs.
  • Experience in documenting APIs using OpenAPI Specification.
  • In-depth knowledge of securing APIs using JSON Web Tokens (JWT).
  • Proficiency in relational and NoSQL databases.
  • Knowledge of implementing scheduled jobs and background processing.
  • Knowledge of code quality parameters and GIT branching concepts.
  • Experience writing test cases, understanding static code analysis.
  • Ability to mentor junior developers and conduct code reviews.
  • Experience with observability tools.
Good to have:
  • Experience with event-driven, asynchronous, and reactive programming patterns.
  • Experience with the AWS product stack.
  • Experience with API Gateways such as Apigee.

We are now building an Engineering Team in Cluj to work alongside our teams in Dublin and across the world, leveraging the architectural & engineering standards, best practices, and processes that will guide the scaled development of the platform. We are seeking a hands-on Backend Engineer for Digital Experiences & Application Development based in the EMEA Hub in the vibrant Cluj offices.

Marsh McLennan (MMC) has established its EMEA Technology Hub in Cluj, Romania, reflecting our commitment to innovation and excellence. This hub is central to our digital strategy, addressing emerging challenges and enhancing service delivery through advanced technology solutions that empower our clients and promote sustainable growth.

This role will be a technical expert for the global team, engaged in the development and implementation of this exciting innovative, strategic technology platform. The focus area for this role will be the technical development of applications within this domain.

This is a fantastic opportunity for the right candidate to shape this critical technology initiative, working with other senior engineers around the world to deliver a large-scale Platform that will transform our business.

We will count on you to:

  • Provide hands-on technical expertise to distributed technology teams in building and maintaining RESTful APIs and Java apps.
  • Work effectively within cross-functional teams and contribute to project planning and execution.
  • Be involved in designing core software components and enterprise-wide applications.
  • Identify areas for improvement in the development process and suggest solutions to enhance team productivity and software quality.
  • Be a change agent with technology development using cloud-native architecture patterns in a distributed environment.
  • Collaborate with Marsh McLennan teams to identify and develop new and existing product opportunities.
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and share insights with the team to foster a culture of continuous learning.
  • Help define and ensure adherence to technology standards, agreed architecture, and engineering best practices across the platform and implementation teams.
  • Work with senior business and technology stakeholders across the world to translate business needs into technical solutions that drive value.

What you need to have:

  • 5+ years of experience delivering scalable, customer-facing digital products in a global context.
  • Understanding of design patterns and applicability to use cases.
  • Core Java development experience, familiar with Java 17 and higher.
  • Hands-on experience in Java back-end development with a strong focus on the Spring Boot framework.
  • Experience in Microservices design and best practices.
  • Expertise in designing, developing, and maintaining RESTful APIs, ensuring high performance and responsiveness.
  • Experience in documenting APIs using OpenAPI Specification to ensure clear and comprehensive API documentation for developers and stakeholders.
  • In-depth knowledge of securing APIs using JSON Web Tokens (JWT) and role-based access control to protect sensitive data.
  • Proficiency in relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB).
  • Knowledge of implementing scheduled jobs and background processing to handle asynchronous tasks efficiently.
  • Knowledge of code quality parameters and GIT branching concepts.
  • Experience writing test cases, understanding static code analysis, code coverage, vulnerability management, etc.
  • Ability to mentor junior developers, conduct code reviews, and promote best practices to improve code quality and team performance.
  • Experience with observability tools for managing distributed services, SaaS platform operational analytics, including insights on user activity and other relevant metrics to track performance and troubleshoot issues proactively.
  • Familiarity with security and identity management best practices, with experience in OIDC, OAuth2, and Okta being a plus.
  • DevOps knowledge, including CI/CD tooling, automated testing, microservice release management and associated best practices.
