Job Description

Zoox is seeking a controls engineer to join the Planning and Control team, focusing on the vehicle’s longitudinal and lateral dynamics. This role involves close collaboration with other teams, such as Trajectory Planner, to define interfaces for control tasks. The ideal candidate is a software engineer with strong technical expertise in controlling complex dynamic systems.

Must Have:
  • Architect and implement control strategies for vehicle’s longitudinal and lateral dynamics.
  • Define specifications and test suites to tune parameters and compare controller performance.
  • Work with validation team to define and execute tests for developed controllers.
  • Contribute to failure and hazard analyses and implement safety mitigations.
  • Work with firmware team for robust, safety-critical controller implementations.
  • Work with simulation team to integrate controllers for development and validation.
  • BS or MS degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong programming skills in C / C++.
  • Strong background in controls (PID, LQR, MPC, etc.) and filter design (FIR, IIR, etc.).
  • Understanding of vehicle dynamics and automotive sensors and actuators.
  • Extensive experience with programming and algorithm design, strong mathematical and geometrical skills.

A controls engineer is sought to join the Planning and Control team. The controls team is responsible for the vehicle’s longitudinal and lateral dynamics. This role involves working closely with other teams within the company, such as the Trajectory Planner team, to define suitable interfaces for the controls tasks. The ideal candidate is a software engineer with technical expertise in control of complex dynamic systems.

In this role, you will:

  • Architect and implement control strategies for the vehicle’s longitudinal and lateral dynamics
  • Define specifications and test suites to tune parameters and compare the performance of different controllers
  • Work with validation team to define and execute tests for developed controllers
  • Contribute to failure and hazard analyses and implement safety mitigations in the control software
  • Work with the firmware team to ensure robust, safety-critical controller implementations in the hardened real-time embedded systems
  • Work with the simulation team to integrate controllers in the simulation environment for development and validation

Qualifications

  • BS or MS degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field, and 8+ years of relevant experience
  • Strong programming skills in C / C++
  • Strong background in controls (PID, LQR, MPC, etc.) and filter design (FIR, IIR, etc.) for complex dynamic systems
  • Understanding of vehicle dynamics and automotive sensors and actuators
  • Extensive experience with programming and algorithm design as well as strong mathematical and geometrical skills

There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Stock Appreciation Rights. A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package. The listed range applies only to the base salary. Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance. The salary range listed in this posting is representative of the range of levels the company is considering for this position.
