Job Description

As a Sound Designer, you will be responsible for crafting, developing, producing, and integrating sound environments for video games and other visual media. Your expertise and passion for video games will enable you to build captivating soundscapes, providing players and spectators with an immersive experience. You will play a key role in bringing the creative vision to life, collaborating with senior audio staff and the game design team.

Must Have:
  • Design and edit engaging sound assets for video games, trailers, and visual media.
  • Integrate sound assets into audio middleware (Wwise, FMOD) and game engines (Unreal, Unity).
  • Design dynamic mixing hierarchies and audio systems in stereo and surround environments.
  • Sync and mix audio to linear media.
  • Test, find, and fix audio-related bugs.
  • Maintain familiarity with basic scripting for game audio and workflow improvement.
  • Work collaboratively and attend meetings with the team and external partners.
  • Contribute to documentation, project tracking, and procedures.
  • Execute recording sessions inside and outside the studio.
  • Hold a degree in sound design, recording, or music.
  • Have experience on at least two completed games or an impressive portfolio/demo.
  • Demonstrate excellent creativity in sound creation.
  • Be proficient in using a DAW (Reaper and/or Pro Tools) for sound design.
  • Be creative, curious, humble, accept constructive criticism, and be a great team player.
  • Work efficiently and be time-conscious.
  • Be good at managing stress and respecting shifting timelines and schedules.
  • Possess a sharpened sense of organization, resourcefulness, and autonomy.

Montreal, Canada

Purpose of Job: As a Sound Designer, your responsibilities include crafting, developing, producing and integrating the sound environment for video games and other visual media. Your expertise in sound and passion for video games in particular enable you to build captivating soundscapes, providing players and spectators with an immersive experience. You play a key role in bringing the creative vision to life, working in collaboration with senior audio staff and the game design team.

List of responsibilities

As part of their duties, Sound Designers are required to perform several tasks including:

  • Designing and editing engaging sound assets for use in video games, trailers and other visual media, in respect to the project’s style and creative direction;
  • Integrating sound assets in audio middleware (Wwise, FMOD) and game engines (Unreal, Unity, custom game engines);
  • Designing dynamic mixing hierarchies and audio systems in both stereo and surround environments;
  • Syncing and mixing audio to linear media;
  • Testing, finding and fixing audio related bugs;
  • Maintaining a familiarity with basic scripting as it pertains to game audio and workflow improvement;
  • Working collaboratively, attend meetings with the team and external partners;
  • Contributing to documentation, project tracking and procedures;
  • Execute recording sessions inside and outside of the studio

Education and Experience

  • Degree in a discipline related to the position (sound design, recording, music)
  • Experience having worked on at least two completed games
  • Or have an impressive portfolio/demo

Competences and qualities

  • You show excellent creativity in sound creation;
  • You are proficient in using a DAW (Reaper and/or Pro Tools) for sound design purposes, in sync with visual material.
  • You are creative, curious, humble, good at accepting constructive criticism and a great team player.

  • You have a good understanding of the audio pipeline working with Wwise and can execute basic integration tasks in at least one game engine (Unreal or Unity).

Duration and schedule

  • Permanent employment
  • 40 hours per week
  • The selected candidate will work in person at SIDE Montreal’s studio
