The Senior DevOps/Software Engineer will be part of Adtran’s Developer Experience (DX) team, focusing on developer efficiency and satisfaction. The candidate must possess exceptional skills in DevOps, Jenkins CI/CD pipelines, GitHub applications, Docker image development, virtualization, developer tooling, and Linux developer environments. This position requires supporting developers across R&D via emails, local office visits, chats, and screen sharing. Senior leadership will be essential in exploring new projects, discovering solutions to large complex problems, developing step-by-step solutions, and coaching others as they implement solutions. The role involves designing, implementing, and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, supporting developers, creating specialized pipelines, migrating legacy systems, creating and maintaining GitHub tools, and developing and maintaining custom Docker images. The engineer will exhibit a DevSecOps mindset and focus on secure infrastructure.

Job Summary 

The Senior DevOps/Software Engineer will be part of Adtran’s Developer Experience (DX) team, which focuses on streamlining developer efficiency and satisfaction as measured by metrics and developer interactionsA candidate must possess exceptional skills and expertise in DevOps, Jenkins CI/CD pipelines, GitHub applications, Docker image development, virtualization, developer tooling, and Linux developer environmentsThis position requires supporting developers across R&D over emails, local office visits (no travel), chats, and screen sharingSenior leadership will be essential in exploring new projects, discovering solutions to large complex problems, developing step-by-step solutions, and coaching others, as they implement the solution. 

Detailed Responsibilities 

DevOps & CI/CD Infrastructure 

  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable CI/CD pipelines in Jenkins, including templates jobs, marker files, and multiple libraries, which build a multitude of applications in C/C++, Python, Javascript, and more, and store artifacts in Artifactory. 

  • Support hundreds of developers using these pipelines by helping them debug challenging pipeline failures and develop their own custom pipelines. 

  • Be comfortable creating advanced, specialized pipelines to troubleshoot infrastructure, identify performance bottlenecks, and discover stability issues. 

  • Migrate legacy systems to use Jenkins, GitHub, and Artifactory. 

  • Create and maintain multiple GitHub tools and applications to: 

  • Modify organizations and repositories. 

  • Create, update, merge, and close pull requests. 

  • Update dependencies automatically for custom build systems. 

  • Report organization, repository, and user statistics. 

  • Develop & maintain custom Docker images for use in build systems, pipelines, and developer tooling. 

  • Exhibit DevSecOps mindset, focusing on secure infrastructure, secure development, reproducible builds, secure software supply chains, & enhancing legacy systems. 

Developer Tooling & Environment 

  • Maintain and enhance Linux developer environments (e.g., Ubuntu, WSL2). 

  • Administrate Ubuntu Linux servers with custom service deployments. 

  • Push-button orchestration to simplify debugging in C/C++ applications. 

  • Create and support custom tooling in Python to simplify developer workflows. 

  • Develop Python programs to automatically generate reports, dashboards, and spreadsheets based on various artifacts, logs, and databases. 

  • Experience & familiarity with modern AI based generative tooling for accelerating & simplifying software development. 

 

Build & Release Engineering 

  • Maintain, support, and enhance C/C++ and Python build systems. 

  • Ensure traceability and debuggability of builds. 

  • Automate testing and release workflows, including static analysis and fuzz testing. 

Mentorship & Leadership 

  • Mentor co-ops, interns, and junior engineers. 

  • Lead technical training sessions and contribute to R&D-wide knowledge sharing. 

  • Provide daily support for developers across multiple domains and technologies. 

Technical Skills 

  • CI/CD: Jenkins 

  • VCS/SCM:  git, GitHub 

  • Virtualization:  WSL, Hyper-V, QEMU/KVM 

  • Operating Systems:  Ubuntu & Windows 

  • Containerization:  Docker, podman (rootless) 

  • Storage:  Artifactory 

  • Programming: Python, Bash (Linux Shell), C/C++ 

  • Monitoring & Metrics: PostgreSQL, Grafana, Elasticsearch 

  • Fundamental understanding of telecommunications & networking (Ethernet, DNS, IPv4, IPv6, TCP/UDP, HTTP, SSH/SSL, certificates, etc.) 

Soft Skills 

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking 

  • Recruitment Support: Conduct interviews and give staffing opinions for entry-level positions 

  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration 

  • Leadership and mentoring capabilities 

  • Initiative-driven and highly autonomous 

  • Adaptability and resilience in high-pressure environments, ability to resolve crucial conversations 

Education & Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (required) 

  • Master’s degree in related field preferred. 

  • SAFe or equivalent agile/scrum training (a plus) 

  • 5-10 years professional experience in related fields
