Sr. Java Backend Developer

Onward Search is a specialized staffing and talent solutions company that helps professionals find top jobs with the nation’s leading brands. We’re looking to hire a Sr. Java Backend Developer for a remote opportunity based in New York, NY. This is a 6-month contract opportunity.

You’ll join the Messaging Platform & Tooling team at a leading digital media and technology company to build and maintain backend services that power high-volume communications like email, push notifications, and in-app messaging. You’ll work in a collaborative, innovative environment that emphasizes engineering best practices and continuous improvement. This role requires candidates to work EST hours.

There is no application deadline for this role.

Responsibilities:

• Develop, maintain, and debug backend services using Java (and some Scala).
• Build distributed, scalable, cloud-native systems on GCP, AWS, or Azure.
• Lead technical initiatives and drive engineering best practices.
• Use Linux environments, monitoring, and metrics for continuous delivery and support.
• Participate in cross-functional collaboration with other engineering and product teams.
• Mentor team members and facilitate continuous improvement in engineering processes.

Qualifications:

• 5+ years of backend development experience with Java.
• Experience in designing, architecting, and maintaining Java-based software systems.
• Exposure to Scala is a plus.
• Experience with cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, or Azure).
• Familiar with operability practices: logging, monitoring, metrics, and Linux-based environments.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems, concurrency, data structures, and algorithms.
• Familiar with agile, TDD, CI/CD, and defensive programming.
• Prior experience in coaching, leading initiatives, and stakeholder alignment is a plus.
