Job Description

Harvey is seeking a Staff Data Scientist to establish the data science foundation, understand user behavior, evaluate product performance, and identify growth opportunities. This role involves conducting in-depth analyses, designing and evaluating experiments, defining core metrics, applying statistical and machine learning techniques, and translating complex insights into actionable recommendations for product and business decisions. The ideal candidate will influence data culture and shape the experimentation framework.

  • Define, track, and evolve core metrics across product and business functions.
  • Apply statistical and machine learning techniques to model user behavior and forecast trends.
  • Translate complex analyses into compelling stories and clear recommendations.
  • Partner with Engineering to co-develop data infrastructure.
  • Lead cross-functional analytics initiatives.
  • Champion a data-informed culture by establishing best practices and mentoring peers.
  • 5+ years of experience in quantitative roles in highly ambiguous environments.
  • Proven track record of designing, executing, and analyzing rigorous experiments using SQL and Python.
  • Experience defining, implementing, and operationalizing feature- and product-level metrics.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively partner with stakeholders.
  • Strategic mindset capable of generating insights beyond traditional statistical significance testing.

Role Overview

We are looking for a Staff Data Scientist who can set the foundation for data science at Harvey. We’ve achieved incredible product-market fit and are scaling rapidly across diverse customer profiles. You’ll bring a combination of analytical rigor, statistical expertise, and modeling skills to help us understand our users, evaluate product performance, and uncover growth opportunities. As one of the earliest members of the data science team, you’ll influence the data culture, shape our experimentation framework, and guide key product and business decisions.

What You'll Do

  • Conduct in-depth analyses to uncover product, customer, and market insights that inform strategy and drive measurable business impact.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate experiments - including A/B tests and advanced causal inference methods - to guide product decisions and optimize outcomes.
  • Define, track, and evolve core metrics across product and business functions, building scalable dashboards and reporting frameworks that enable data-driven decision-making.
  • Apply statistical and machine learning techniques to model user behavior, forecast trends, and identify opportunities for growth and optimization.
  • Translate complex analyses into compelling stories, delivering clear recommendations to product managers, engineers, executives, and cross-functional partners.
  • Partner with Engineering to co-develop data infrastructure, ensuring robust pipelines, reliable data sources, and scalable systems that power analytics and modeling.
  • Lead cross-functional analytics initiatives that synthesize competitive dynamics, customer feedback, and market trends into actionable opportunities for the business.
  • Champion a data-informed culture by establishing best practices, mentoring peers, and shaping the strategic role of data science at Harvey.

What You Have

  • 5+ years of experience in quantitative roles operating in highly ambiguous environments, ideally as an early data scientist or product analyst within a hyper-growth product company or research organization
  • Proven track record of designing, executing, and analyzing rigorous experiments using SQL and Python, with the ability to translate results into actionable product recommendations
  • Experience defining, implementing, and operationalizing feature- and product-level metrics from the ground up
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively partner with product managers, engineers, and executives
  • Strategic mindset capable of generating insights that extend beyond traditional statistical significance testing to inform long-term product and business direction
