The System Engineer II at Plug Power's St. Gabriel, LA hydrogen plant supports hydrogen generation and liquefaction facilities. Good To Have:
  • Direct, hands-on experience working at the plant level as a Plant Engineer.
  • Familiarity with CMMS platforms, maintenance workflows, spare parts management.
  • Experience using process simulation software (e.g., Honeywell UniSim) and data historian systems (e.g., OSIsoft PI).
Must Have:
  • Provide engineering and technical support to hydrogen production facilities.
  • Support troubleshooting and resolution of operational upsets and reliability issues.
  • Develop, update, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and technical documentation.
  • Support spare parts management and vendor service contracts.
  • Ensure compliance with Process Safety Management (PSM) standards.
  • Participate in Management of Change (MOC) processes, incident investigations, and root cause analyses (RCA).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams for plant productivity and reliability improvements.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Chemical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 3–5 years of relevant experience in process, chemical, or industrial gas plants.
  • Strong understanding of material and energy balances, process hydraulics, and PSM principles.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting process equipment.
  • Experience in writing and managing technical procedures for plant operations.
  • Working knowledge of process instrumentation and measurement systems.
  • Proven ability to manage complex technical projects, prioritize tasks, and work effectively in cross-functional environments.
  • Self-motivated, results-oriented, and able to work independently.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25%.

Position Summary

The System Engineer is a key member of the Engineering and Operations Support team responsible for hydrogen generation and liquefaction facilities. This position is based at Plug’s St. Gabriel, LA hydrogen liquefaction plant and is part of the centralized Plant Engineering team supporting all Plug hydrogen production sites across the U.S.

The System Engineer plays a critical role in developing, optimizing, and sustaining the design and performance of Plug’s hydrogen generation and liquefaction systems. Working closely with plant operations and maintenance teams, the role requires a deep understanding of plant processes and system integration to drive continuous improvement in safety, reliability, and efficiency. In addition, the System Engineer is responsible for developing and maintaining technical procedures, and for managing spare part specifications, procurement, and inventory coordination to support daily operation and maintenance needs across the plant network in collaboration with procurement team.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering and technical support to assigned hydrogen production facilities, including on-site assistance during commissioning, startup, shutdown, and maintenance activities. Support troubleshooting and resolution of operational upsets and reliability issues, both remotely and in the field.
  • Develop, update, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and technical documentation for plant operation and maintenance activities.
  • Assist in developing and implementing training documents and certification processes for operators and technicians when new procedures or design modifications are introduced
  • Support spare parts management and vendor service contracts to ensure reliable plant operation and minimize downtime.
  • Ensure compliance with Process Safety Management (PSM) standards through active participation in Management of Change (MOC) processes, incident investigations, and root cause analyses (RCA)
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement plant productivity and reliability improvements, using engineering tools such as process simulation software (e.g., Honeywell UniSim) and data historian systems (e.g., OSIsoft PI)

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Chemical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • 3–5 years of relevant experience in process, chemical, or industrial gas plants in system/process engineering or operations support roles; direct, hands-on experience working at the plant level as a Plant Engineer is strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of material and energy balances, process hydraulics, and process safety management (PSM) principles.
  • Hands-on experience in troubleshooting process equipment such as compressors, turboexpanders, pumps, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and gas purification systems.
  • Experience in writing and managing technical procedures for plant operations is required.
  • Familiarity with CMMS platforms, maintenance workflows, spare parts management is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of process instrumentation and measurement systems including gas analyzers, control valves, relief valves, and transmitters.
  • Proven ability to manage complex technical projects, prioritize tasks, and work effectively in cross-functional environments.
  • Self-motivated, results-oriented, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% to support other site operations as required.

Exempt employees are expected to work the hours necessary to fulfill their responsibilities, which may exceed 40 hours per week.

Pay Rate: $76,900.00 - $115,400.00
