Job Summary
Join the Ground Missile Defense (GMD) program, a critical component of the Missile Defense System, to defend against ballistic missile attacks. This role involves software development and support for the Missile Defense Agency’s (MDA’s) GMD program. Responsibilities include developing and implementing system updates, collaborating within an agile scrum team, and performing Agile Product Owner duties for the GWS GFC Threat State Algorithms and Analysis team. The successful candidate will lead technical tasks for algorithmic development and evaluation, ensuring designs are properly assessed before tactical implementation.
Must Have
- US Citizenship with Active Secret Clearance (ability to acquire TS)
- 12+ years experience in STEM field (or less with advanced degrees)
- Software development and support for GMD program
- Developing and implementing system updates
- Collaborating in a cross-functional agile scrum team
- Performing Agile Product Owner (PO) responsibilities
- Leading technical tasks for algorithmic development and evaluation
- Experience in data analysis, performance analysis, or algorithm development
- Understanding of track processing, discrimination, propagation, 6d covariance algorithms
- Proficiency in technical problem solving and system integration
- Knowledge of MATLAB, Python, or similar engineering tools
- Experience with Ada programming language
- Ability to communicate technical information clearly
- Background in Ballistic Missile Defense, battle management, threat state processing

- Recent experience applying advanced mathematical concepts (Numerical Analysis, Linear Algebra, Probability/Statistics) to complex problems and solutions
- Recent and extensive experience developing analysis tools in MATLAB and PYTHON

- Successful performance of root cause analysis of large complex software systems
- High Comfort level using the Atlassian toolset (Jira/Confluence)

What We're Doing
Become a part of something IMPACT-ful! Ground Missile Defense (GMD) is the heart of the Missile Defense System and a key element of our nation’s defense against ballistic missile attacks.
The GMD Weapon System (GWS) processes data from multiple sensors to identify and characterize the inbound ballistic missile threat, plans the best defensive solution, and launches the intercepting missiles to negate the threat.
The Work
The Systems Engineer Sr Stf responsibilities include software development and support of the Missile Defense Agency’s (MDA’s) Ground-Based Mid-course Defense (GMD) program. You will be responsible for developing and implementing system updates that best meet changing customer needs for new and existing features, collaborating with team members, and working in a cross-functional agile scrum team.
The successful candidate will perform most typical Agile Product Owner (PO) responsibilities for the GWS GFC Threat State Algorithms and Analysis team, making sure that developed features and related sprint stories contain the appropriate closure criteria and that they meet those criteria prior to be closed. To fulfill this role, the candidate will lead and perform technical tasks to support the development and evaluation of Algorithmic candidates addressing new capabilities in the tactical product. This engineer/analyst will help ensure algorithmic design has been properly evaluated prior to implementation in the tactical product.
Basic Qualifications:
- US. Citizenship with an Active Secret Clearance (with the ability to acquire and maintain a TS level clearance)
- 12 Years of relevant experience with Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) discipline; 10 Years with Master’s degree; 8 Years with PhD.
- Recent experience in one or more of the following areas: data analysis, performance analysis, or physics/mathematics-based algorithm development.
- General understanding of any, or all, of the following algorithm domains: track processing, track reporting, discrimination, propagation, and 6d covariance propagation/ prediction
- High proficiency in technical problem solving and integrating solutions into a larger system
- Knowledge of MATLAB, Python or similar engineering tools used in prototyping algorithms
- Experience reading and understanding the Ada programming language
- Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical personnel
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Extensive background in Ballistic Missile Defense, midcourse missile defense, battle management, threat state processing, weapon target assignment
Desired Skills:

Work Schedules: Lockheed Martin supports a variety of alternate work schedules that provide additional flexibility to our employees. Schedules range from standard 40 hours over a five day work week while others may be condensed. These condensed schedules provide employees with additional time away from the office and are in addition to our Paid Time off benefits.
Schedule for this Position: 9x80 every other Friday off
