Job Description

As a Technical Director at Skydance Animation Madrid, you will design and develop innovative tools to address specific departmental challenges for our next animated feature film. This role involves creating solutions beyond off-the-shelf software, maximizing productivity, and maintaining high-quality standards. Developments can range from simple Python scripts to complex algorithms, supporting artists and collaborating with engineering teams.
Good To Have:
  • Experience with Renderman and Arnold is a plus.
  • Spanish desirable.
Must Have:
  • Develops and maintains required tools following production department requirements and Production Engineering Team guides.
  • Partners with Artists and other Engineers to iterate, debug, document, and refine tools and processes for feature film production.
  • Works on short-term needs, originated by shot challenges.
  • Acts as the first support line to solve day-to-day problems artists may encounter.
  • Keeps up on current artistic methodologies and on technology trends and tools.
  • Collaborates with other team members, when necessary.
  • Follows the Supervisor’s and Lead´s guidance.

As a Technical Director, you will design and develop innovative tools to overcome specific challenges related to the department’s development for our next animated feature film. This effort seeks to implement solutions that off-the-shelf software would not provide while maximizing productivity and meeting the high-quality standard set by the company. The scope of the developments may be from a simple python script to a larger development involving complex algorithms.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains the required tools following the requirements supplied by the production departments and following the Production Engineering Team guides.
  • Partners with Artists and other Engineers to iterate, debug, document, and refine tools and processes for feature film production.
  • Works on short-term needs, originated by shot challenges.
  • Acts as the first support line to solve day-to-day problems artists may encounter.
  • Keeps up on current artistic methodologies and on technology trends and tools that best suit the production and the company in the development of a stronger creative and technical environment.
  • Collaborates with other team members, when necessary.
  • Follows the Supervisor’s and Lead´s guidance.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years in VFX or animation industries.
  • At least 1 year of experience in the animation industry**.
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Computer Graphics, or comparable discipline and/or technical and creative knowledge gained through equivalent experience.
  • Expert in Python.
  • Experience programming with one or more of the following software: Maya, Houdini, Nuke, and Mari.
  • Experience working with a source version control system (git).
  • Experience with Renderman and Arnold is a plus.
  • Experience in Linux and Windows operating systems.
  • Experience in animation productions.
  • Good understanding of production pipelines.
  • Experience with agile development and scrum methodology.
  • User interaction design with a working knowledge of standard UI toolkits (PySide2).
  • Understanding of CG concepts and workflows.
  • Medium-high English level.
  • Spanish desirable.
