We live in a mobile and device driven world where knowledge of the physical world around us is needed. We rely on this knowledge to get around, to learn about our environment, and to enable spectacular new features for custom applications. Apple is meeting those needs as robustly and creatively as possible and is interested in people who want to help meet that commitment. The success we are striving for will be the result of very skilled people working in an environment which cultivates creativity, partnership, and thinking of old problems in new ways. If that sounds like the kind of environment that you find intriguing, then let's talk. These elements come together to make Apple an amazing environment for motivated people to do the greatest work of their lives. You will become part of a team that sets the standard in fostering excellence, creativity and innovation. Will you help us design the next generation of revolutionary Apple products? The Sensing Product Design team is looking for a talented mechanical engineer to develop great experiences and bring Apple products to life. We are the team developing many of the sensors that changed the way people interact with their technology. Touch redefined the phone and tablet, Touch ID seamlessly secured them, and the heart rate monitor let you keep tabs on yourself.

In this role, you will drive cross-functional failure analysis, root cause investigations, and design convergence through data synthesis, vendor management, and leading executive reviews across program milestones. The position is also responsible for influencing mechanical design and process decisions through Design-of-Experiment (DOE) analysis, while contributing to early architecture development and future technology initiatives. In the prototyping and validation phases, you will support external manufacturing vendors with process development and root cause analysis for issues found during testing. Support for our vendors includes international travel between 15% and 25%. At the end of the extraordinary team effort, your work will be in the hands of millions of people making a visible difference in their daily lives.

  • Identifying/brainstorming design solutions, grading risk, and informing final design.
  • Leading a cross-functional team through failure analysis to identify root-cause and inform corrective actions.
  • Coordinating and managing the path-to-closure on complex, multi-faceted issues.
  • Applying rigorous and thoughtful experimental design to reduce design risk/uncertainty as quickly as possible.
  • Running tolerance studies to ensure designs are feasible over manufacturing tolerances.
  • Communicating to Apple’s engineering leadership in concise, comprehensive technical depth.
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering (or related field) and a minimum of 3 years relevant industry experience in a mechanical design, failure analysis, or validation role.
  • Ability to inform design intent (requirements) and define path-to-validation.
  • Ability to leverage various analysis techniques (tolerance analysis, FEA, CT, X-ray, FIB/SEM/EDX, Monte Carlo, design-of-experiments, etc.) to inform root cause.
  • Ability to collaborate with a diverse cross-functional team and external vendors to achieve project goals.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills are required.
  • Familiarity with building 3D CAD and drafting 2D technical drawings is required.
  • Strong technical curiosity and desire to learn is required.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis in MATLAB or JMP is preferred.
  • Familiarity with sensor technology, analog/digital signals, flex circuits, IC packaging is preferred.
