Job Description

The VP of Platform Engineering will lead the modernization of Zelis's Price platform over three years, focusing on building a scalable architecture, robust API marketplace, data layer, and modern app framework. This role involves integrating AI and data to enhance platform capabilities, ensuring operational efficiency, and supporting product innovation for healthcare pricing and payment accuracy.

Position Overview

The VP of Platform Engineering is responsible for leading the modernization of the Zelis Price platform over the next three years. The Price platform supports products that optimize healthcare pricing and payment accuracy to ensure fair and transparent transactions between payers and providers. This role focuses on building a modern, scalable architecture to support the growth of the Price business, enabling product innovation and operational efficiency. In the role, you will drive the transformation of the platform into a state-of-the-art solution that includes a robust API marketplace, a robust data layer, and a modern app framework to consolidate multiple portals. You will the integration of AI and data into the platform, ensuring the engineering team harnesses data-driven insights and builds AI-driven solutions that enhance the platform’s capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Technology Modernization and Platform Scalability

  • Lead the end-to-end modernization of the Zelis Price platforms, transforming it into a highly scalable, reliable, and secure solution that supports rapid growth and evolving customer needs.
  • Architect and implement a modular, scalable architecture that can handle large transaction volumes, real-time processing, and high availability, ensuring 24/7/365 operational readiness.
  • Develop a state-of-the-art API marketplace, enabling seamless integrations with third-party applications, partners, and customers.
  • Build a modern App framework to consolidate multiple customer-facing portals, streamlining user experience and enabling faster delivery of new features and updates.
  • Implement a data fabric to unify data across the organization, enabling real-time data processing, advanced analytics, and AI-driven insights.
  • Design and implement an event-driven architecture to enhance the platform’s responsiveness, enabling real-time event processing, automation, and notification systems.

2. AI and Data Strategy

  • Incorporate AI and machine learning capabilities into the Price platforms, driving data-driven decision-making and automation.
  • Develop and execute the strategy for leveraging advanced analytics and AI models to improve transaction accuracy, fraud detection, and operational efficiency.
  • Implement real-time monitoring and predictive analytics to optimize platform performance and prevent operational issues before they impact customers.
  • Ensure that data governance, security, and compliance measures are integrated into the data strategy, aligning with HiTRUST, PCI-DSS, and SOC2 standards.
  • Collaborate with data teams to create a unified data strategy, ensuring data quality, governance, and accessibility across the platforms.

3. Enabling Product Engineering and Collaboration

  • Partner closely with the VP of Product Management & Engineering to ensure that the engineering organization is delivering a modern platform that supports the product roadmap and customer needs.
  • Build and maintain the underlying technology infrastructure that enables the product engineering teams to rapidly innovate and deploy new features.
  • Ensure that the product teams are equipped with the tools, frameworks, and APIs needed to deliver a seamless user experience across all customer touchpoints.
  • Collaborate with the product engineering teams to consolidate existing many-to-many portals into a unified App Store framework, providing customers with a streamlined, integrated platform.

4. Leading the Technology Transformation

  • Drive the three-year technology transformation agenda, ensuring that milestones are met, risks are mitigated, and the platform evolves in line with business growth and customer needs.
  • Oversee the migration from legacy systems to modern architectures, ensuring that the transition is smooth, with minimal disruption to business operations.
  • Implement and enforce best practices for modern software development, including Agile methodologies, DevOps, continuous integration, and continuous delivery (CI/CD).
  • Maintain a focus on security, compliance, and risk management throughout the modernization process, ensuring that the platform adheres to the highest standards for security and data protection.

5. Building and Leading High-Performing Teams

  • Lead a high-performing engineering organization capable of executing the modernization agenda while maintaining operational excellence.
  • Build and scale teams to support the company’s transformation efforts, ensuring a balance between innovation and operational reliability.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning within the engineering teams, ensuring they stay up-to-date with modern technologies and practices.
  • Drive recruitment, talent development, and professional growth initiatives to ensure the engineering teams are equipped to handle the challenges of the platform’s transformation.

6. Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders across product management, operations, infrastructure, and compliance to ensure alignment on the technology transformation roadmap.
  • Work closely with the CTO and executive leadership to communicate the progress, risks, and opportunities of the modernization efforts.
  • Partner with infrastructure and operations teams to ensure that the platform’s architecture supports high availability, performance, and security.

7. Operational Excellence and Risk Management

  • Ensure that the modernized platform supports high availability, scalability, and fault tolerance, maintaining operational excellence across all services.
  • Implement real-time monitoring and alerting systems to detect and resolve issues before they impact platform performance or customer experience.
  • Establish and monitor KPIs for platform performance, reliability, and scalability, ensuring that the modernization efforts translate into measurable improvements.
  • Ensure that risk management practices are embedded in all engineering processes, mitigating operational and security risks associated with the transformation.

Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of technology leadership experience, with a focus on platform modernization and engineering transformation in large-scale, mission-critical environments, preferably within the payments or financial services industry.
  • Proven track record of leading complex modernization programs, including migrating legacy systems to modern architectures and cloud-based environments.
  • Expertise in building scalable platforms, API marketplaces, data fabrics, and event-driven architectures, with a deep understanding of cloud infrastructure and modern development practices.
  • Experience incorporating AI, machine learning, and data strategies into technology platforms, with a focus on advanced analytics and automation.
  • Strong background in API development, microservices architecture, and real-time transaction processing.
  • Extensive experience leading Agile, DevOps, and CI/CD practices, with a focus on operational efficiency and rapid delivery.
  • Exceptional leadership skills, with a proven ability to build and scale engineering organizations to deliver large-scale technology transformations.
  • Strong understanding of security, compliance, and risk management, particularly in payments or regulated industries (e.g., PCI-DSS, SOC2).
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to influence executive leadership and cross-functional teams.

Base Salary Range

$224,000.00 - $299,000.00

The base salary range allows us to make an offer that considers multiple individualized factors, including experience, education, qualifications, as well as job-related and industry-related knowledge and skills, etc. Base pay is just one part of our Total Rewards package, which may also include discretionary bonus plans, commissions, or other incentives depending on the role.
