Job Description

The Art Director will be responsible for defining the art direction in collaboration with the Lead Designer and artists, leading art investigations, and collaborating in prototyping workshops. They will also be involved in early-stage estimations and art budget planning, working with tech art and programmers to understand technical limitations. The role requires reviewing in-game environments, assets, and UI, mentoring other artists, and creating presentations. The ideal candidate will have experience in setting art direction, creating documentation, and a pragmatic approach to asset production. They should also possess strong organizational and communication skills.

Our client is growing their team to work on their first title and are looking for an experienced Art Director to join them. Their next game is a tactical RPG and they are aiming to create an unforgettable experience for the players.
 
Role responsibilities:
  • Define the art direction in cooperation with the Lead Designer and artists
  • Lead art investigations, incl. potential synergies with other projects in the company
  • Collaborate in prototyping workshops
  • Early-stage estimations and plan for art budget with VP of production
  • Work with tech art and programmers to understand technical limitations and discuss tools and pipelines
  • Define in-game asset quality benchmarks
  • Assist with the production of marketing assets as needed
  • Review in-game environments, assets, and UI with a holistic "big picture" focus
  • Mentor other artists on the team
  • Create and hold presentations for the team or external collaborators as needed 
 
Desirable skills and knowledge:
  • 8+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience working with mobile games
  • Have shipped several mobile games
  • Experience with Unity
  • Experience with setting the art direction and creating relevant documentation
  • Pragmatic approach to asset production and willingness to embrace new technologies
  • Background as a concept artist, illustrator, and/or 3D artist
  • Understanding of art concepts: concept art, modeling, texturing, modularity
  • Experience with prototyping is a plus
  • Portfolio which demonstrates your seniority and skills
  • Great cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
