About the Role:
Vanity Fair is seeking a sharp, resourceful Director, Digital Operations & Audience to drive growth, engagement, and retention across our digital platforms. This role is designed for someone who thrives at the intersection of strategy and operations—equally comfortable developing audience growth initiatives and ensuring smooth execution of day-to-day digital publishing workflows.
The ideal candidate would be nimble and possess a desire to get in the weeds whenever necessary while contributing meaningfully to high-level strategic conversations focused on audience KPIs and growth. A deep passion for and understanding of Vanity Fair’s DNA is essential, as is the ability to operate at the intersection of editorial and audience development. A successful candidate will be both analytical and creative with a keen ability to translate data into actionable strategies that drive audience growth and brand impact.
What You’ll Do:
- Serve as the primary liaison for all audience development priorities maintaining open lines of communication across editorial, product, technology, revenue and marketing teams. Clearly advocate for audience growth and engagement goals company-wide.
- Partner with editors to ensure all content is optimized for all major digital distribution channels (including search, social, and newsletters) and collaborate with product and technology teams to enhance performance at key traffic-driving moments.
- Partner with editorial leadership to evolve the newsletter portfolio from concept development to performance testing. Run A/B tests to refine content, layout, and delivery for maximum reach and engagement.
- Recognize and prioritize emerging opportunities for audience engagement that align with editorial vision while proposing and implementing creative strategies to fill gaps and extend Vanity Fair’s reach
- Identify operational bottlenecks in web publishing processes and implement improvements for speed, efficiency, and quality control.
- Work alongside editorial leaders to maintain a long-lead digital editorial calendar, integrating day-to-day output with issue roll-outs, tentpole events and key cultural moments while coordinating content distribution across editorial, social and newsletter teams.
- Conduct regular analysis of competitors and audience behavior to surface trends, inform future strategy, and uncover growth opportunities across channels.
- Manage framework for regular tracking, measuring, and reporting on audience performance to keep leadership informed of challenges and opportunities across channels, ensuring insights directly inform editorial decisions.
- Manage and mentor a global team of audience professionals and producers to optimize day-to-day web and newsletter publishing workflow
What You’ll Bring
- 5-7 years of progressive experience in digital content with a demonstrated track record in audience development
- Experience managing teams and training people; given the changing landscape of audience development and media channels, specific experience helping employees navigate shifting priorities and imperatives is also a must.
- Experience with CMS workflows and an eye for operational efficiency in fast-paced media environments
- Proven success growing and engaging audiences across multiple digital platforms.
- Strong working knowledge of SEO principles, keyword research, and analytics platforms
- Analytical mindset with the ability to translate data into actionable insights.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills—able to work with cross-functional stakeholders and influence decision-making at all levels.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal; the ability to clearly deliver difficult feedback and insights to writers, editors, and producers, with diplomacy and finesse.
The expected base salary range for this position is from 132,000 - 165,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
In addition to salary and a generous employee benefits package, successful candidates may also be eligible to receive discretionary bonus compensation.
