Job Description

The Embedded Design Engineer is responsible for the full product life cycle of electronic hardware design and embedded software development for Hartridge products. This role involves collaborating with Applications Engineering and Software development teams, leading embedded design, and ensuring projects meet specifications and timelines. The engineer will develop and support PCB hardware and firmware from concept to obsolescence, requiring proficiency in laboratory design and development workshop environments, with strong data analysis skills.
Good To Have:
  • Experience in LabVIEW.
  • Knowledge of project management tools and techniques.
  • Experience with DFM/DFA (design for manufacture/assembly), VA/VE, FMEA.
  • Knowledge of CI tools.
  • Ability to read technical drawings and understand mechanical design principles.
Must Have:
  • Lead the embedded design function for Hartridge Ltd.
  • Design authority for all PCB and firmware solutions for the business.
  • Work with the Engineering team to ensure projects are delivered on time and specification.
  • Provide technical decision making when qualifying new/updated products or solutions.
  • Responsible for the Embedded lab and the equipment within.
  • Develop embedded design specifications and concepts for new products and accessories.
  • Design and execute experiments to validate/verify new machine / control concepts.
  • Control PCB and firmware design standards for Hartridge Ltd.
  • Maintain and develop technical knowledge and expertise in embedded design and controls.
  • Degree qualified engineer with 5+ years experience in electronics engineering or HNC/HND.
  • Full UK driving licence and eligible to work in the UK.
  • High competence in Altium and similar design systems (schematic design, layout, library management).
  • Strong hardware design capabilities, with aptitude to power electronics and machine system integration.
  • Strong firmware development capability and debug techniques (C, Keil IDE).
  • Strong competence in data processing, visualisation and analysis languages/tools (Python, SQL).
  • Experience with revision control systems (e.g., Subversion svn).
  • Sound working knowledge of EMC.
  • NPI/NPD experience in an engineering/product development environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, specifically MS Excel.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other business functions and external customers.

JOB PURPOSE

Job purpose:

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Embedded Design Engineer is responsible for the full product life cycle of electronic hardware design and embedded software development within Hartridge products.

Working in close collaboration with the Applications Engineering team and Software development team, the Embedded Design Engineer has sole responsibility for the development and support of the PCB hardware and firmware, through specification, concept, design, production, service, support and obsolescence.

Requiring a self-starter who is both proficient working in a laboratory environment concepting and designing PCB hardware and firmware, as well as a development workshop working on Hartridge equipment. Strong data analysis skills would be advantageous.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Key accountabilities:

  • Lead the embedded design function for Hartridge Ltd. Design authority for all PCB and firmware solutions for the business
  • Work with the Engineering team, to ensure projects are delivered on time, on specification and are suited to the Hartridge customer base
  • Provide technical decision making when qualifying new/updated products or solutions
  • Responsible for the Embedded lab and the equipment within
  • Developing the embedded design specifications and the concepts which will deliver new products and accessories
  • Designing and executing and/or delegating experiments to validate/verify new machine / control concepts
  • Controlling the PCB and firmware design standards for Hartridge Ltd
  • Maintaining and developing technical knowledge and expertise in the field of embedded design and controls

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

Qualifications/education

  • Degree qualified engineer, with 5 years + experience within an electronics engineering environment
  • Alternatively, having attained an HNC/HND in electronics engineering
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Eligible to work in the UK

Experience/skills

  • High level of competence in Altium and similar design systems (PCB schematic design, layout and library management)
  • Strong hardware design capabilities, with a particular aptitude to power electronics and integration with other machine systems
  • Embedded processors (preferably ARM Cortex M4)
  • Digital / analogue (low to medium speed)
  • Power supplies / dc-dc converters (3.3V to 200V)
  • Solenoid actuator drivers
  • Serial communications (Ethernet, USB, RS232, SPI, I2C)
  • A2D, D2A
  • EMC
  • Strong firmware development capability, and associated debug techniques (C, Keil IDE)
  • Strong competence in other beneficial languages/tools for data processing, visualisation and analysis (e.g Python, SQL)
  • Revision control system (e.g. Subversion svn)
  • PCB test rig and process design
  • Knowledge of a wide range of processor architectures and associated tools/compilers
  • Soldering of PTH & SMD devices
  • Ability to create and develop technical specifications
  • PCB BOM management and revision control

Proficient in other

  • Sound working knowledge of EMC
  • NPI/NPD experience in an engineering/product development environment
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, specifically competent with MS Excel and/or other data processing tools
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other business functions and external customers

Non-essential but desirable requirements:

  • Experience in LabVIEW
  • Knowledge of project management tools and techniques
