Job Description

This Software Developer role, reporting to the Engineering Manager, involves developing and supporting Hartridge software solutions for products and applications. The successful candidate will work in a small team, focusing on designing software applications that run on or interface with Hartridge equipment, primarily on Windows embedded PCs or tablets, controlling devices and managing data acquisition and results presentation.
Good To Have:
  • Competent in firmware development, and associated debug techniques (C, Keil IDE, DAVE).
  • Experience of microcontrollers (Infineon XMC 8051).
  • Experience in LabVIEW.
  • Experience of software protection and licensing methodologies (SoftwareKey).
  • Experience of PC image creation and deployment using “Clonezilla”.
  • NPI/NPD experience in an engineering/product development environment.
Must Have:
  • Lead software development activities for Hartridge Ltd.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, on specification, and suited to the Hartridge customer base.
  • Provide technical decision-making when qualifying new/updated products or solutions.
  • Responsible for the software development tools and equipment within.
  • Develop software design documents/specifications and concepts for new products and accessories.
  • Design and execute experiments to validate/verify new machine/control concepts.
  • Control firmware design standards for Hartridge Ltd.
  • Maintain and develop technical knowledge and expertise in software design and controls.
  • Degree qualified software engineer with 5+ years experience in a software development environment, ideally involving industrial equipment or special purpose machinery.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Eligible to work in the UK.
  • Experience of writing software for machine and device control, data acquisition and real-time activity.
  • OO Software design and development in C# and C/C++ under Microsoft Windows 10 and 11.
  • Experience with debugging in Microsoft Visual Studio 2008/2015.
  • Capable of design & debugging within LabWindows/CVI v8.5 (or similar framework).
  • Experience of serial (RS232, CAN) and networked communications (TCPIP).
  • Competent in software revision control systems (e.g. Subversion SVN, Git).

Reporting to the Engineering Manager and working in close collaboration with the Applications Engineering team and Embedded Design Engineer, the Software development team is responsible for the development and support of Hartridge software solutions deployed on Hartridge products and applications, through specification, concept, design, production, service, support and obsolescence.

Working in a small software development team, the role requires a self-starter who is proficient working in a special purpose machinery development environment, concepting and designing software applications which either run on, or interface to, Hartridge equipment. Strong data analysis skills would be advantageous.

The applications predominantly run on Windows embedded PCs or Windows tablets, controlling various devices through existing embedded boards. The application manages the activities (manual and automatic) required to test electro/mechanical devices, display & store acquired data and present results and such-like.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the software development activities for Hartridge Ltd.
  • Work with the Engineering team, to ensure projects are delivered on time, on specification and are suited to the Hartridge customer base
  • Provide technical decision making when qualifying new/updated products or solutions
  • Responsible for the software development tools and the equipment within
  • Developing the software design documents/specifications and the concepts which will deliver new products and accessories
  • Designing and executing and/or delegating experiments to validate/verify new machine / control concepts
  • Controlling firmware design standards for Hartridge Ltd
  • Maintaining and developing technical knowledge and expertise in the field of software design and controls

What we’re looking for

Qualifications/education

  • Degree qualified software engineer, with 5 years+ experience within a software development environment, ideally involving industrial equipment or special purpose machinery
  • Alternatively, having attained relevant experience and qualifications in a similar software development environment
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Eligible to work in the UK

Experience/skills

  • Experience of writing software for machine and device control, data acquisition and real-time activity.
  • OO Software design and development in C# and C/C++ under Microsoft Windows 10 and 11.
  • Experience with debugging in Microsoft Visual Studio 2008/2015
  • Capable of design & debugging within LabWindows/CVI v8.5 (or similar framework)
  • Experience with NSIS software installer package.
  • Experience of serial (RS232, CAN) and networked communications (TCPIP).
  • Experience with unit testing methods
  • Experience of Human Machine Interface design (MSDN Forms and Lab windows).
  • Competent in software revision control systems (e.g. Subversion SVN, Git)
  • Experience of using software fault tracking systems
  • Experience with other beneficial languages/tools for data processing, visualisation and analysis (e.g Python, SQL)
  • Agile project management methodology
  • Basic knowledge of XML, CSS and Java script.

Proficient in other

  • Remote Data Backup using Syncthing
  • Support of custom applications written in C#
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, specifically competent with MS Excel and/or other data processing tools
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other business functions and external customers
