Job Description

This Field Service Technician role provides on-site and remote support for Wabtec's I-ETMS (Interoperable Electronic Train Management System) and Positive Train Control (PTC) program. The technician acts as the primary technical interface at customer sites, maintaining, testing, and troubleshooting I-ETMS systems, including interfaces to airbrake, recording, and locomotive systems. Responsibilities include guiding customer personnel, communicating technical details, and assisting with action plans and reliability initiatives.

Must Have:
  • Act as primary technical interface between Wabtec and Customer management/crews for I-ETMS maintenance
  • Develop product knowledge to maintain, test, and troubleshoot I-ETMS systems
  • Guide and assist Customer employees in testing, troubleshooting, and operation of I-ETMS systems
  • Communicate technical and operational details to stakeholders in PTC systems
  • Be located on Customer property in Houston, TX
  • Work primarily first shift, with flexibility for on-site or phone support as required
  • Interpret schematics and drawings
  • Work with a minimum amount of supervision
  • Possess computer hardware and software system knowledge
  • Have three years of experience with Positive Train Control, or one year with I-ETMS
  • Experience with pneumatic systems, field installation/testing of electronics, software installation/configuration/testing, and mechanical systems
  • Ability to read, interpret, and explain technical documents (engineering drawings, specifications, test procedures, electrical schematics)
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot electrical, electronic, software, and complex system issues
  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical installation techniques and principles
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Must be able to work independently in geographically dispersed locations
  • Proficiency in MS Office software
  • Technical writing skills required for internal and external documentation
  • Ability to communicate on a technical level with engineers, customers, railroad craft personnel and co-workers
  • Ability to apply commonsense and logical progression to problem solving challenges
  • Ability to comprehend instructions, specifications, and policies
  • Assist Customer in downloading, reading and analyzing log files
  • Ability to make independent decisions quickly

OVERVIEW OF POSITION

This technician will provide field service support focused on the operation of Wabtec’s I-ETMS (Interoperable Electronic Train Management System) and overall Positive Train Control (PTC) program. The FST will be the primary Wabtec interface at the customer site and provide on-site and remote support to customer crews, maintenance personnel and operations teams, and carry out the following primary duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act as the primary technical interface between Wabtec business units and Customer management and crews involved in I-ETMS maintenance
  • Develop product knowledge required to properly maintain, test, and troubleshoot I-ETMS systems, including interfaces to airbrake, recording and locomotive systems.
  • Guide and assist Customer employees and craft in the testing, troubleshooting and operation of the I-ETMS systems, as required
  • Communicate technical and operational details to stakeholders in PTC systems, in both Customer and Wabtec organizations
  • The FST will be located on Customer property in Houston, TX
  • Work primarily first shift on Customer property; FST must be flexible to assist Customer at any time, by phone or on site as required, for necessary support of system troubleshooting and maintenance activities.
  • Travel domestically, on occasion, for I-ETMS support, integration testing, training, etc., as directed by the Customer or Wabtec
  • Other duties and assignments as directed by Wabtec management
  • Assist Customer with development of short term action plans and long term reliability initiatives
  • Interpret schematics and drawings
  • Work with a minimum amount of supervision

Computer hardware and software system knowledge required

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Provide technical support, as required, for other Wabtec products, such as electronic air brakes, video recording systems, event recorders, etc., as applicable

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum education, job experience, certifications, skills, knowledge and abilities that incumbent must typically have to perform the essential functions of the job acceptably with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  • Bachelors in Engineering, Associate’s Degree in Electronics or Computer Technology, or technical related experience or training in the industry
  • Three years of experience with Positive Train Control, or one year of experience with I-ETMS
  • Knowledge of locomotive operation, electronics, and control systems and/or railroad experience preferred, though not required
  • Experience with pneumatic systems; field installation and testing of electronics; software installation, configuration and testing; and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to read, interpret and explain technical documents such as engineering drawings and specifications, test procedures, and electrical schematics required
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot electrical, electronic, software, and complex system issues
  • Field service/field engineering experience a plus
  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical installation techniques and principles
  • Knowledge of Lean tools, principles and activities.
  • Experience developing and improving business processes
  • Experience and knowledge of basic statistical analysis and reliability tools

Specialized equipment used in this job

  • Digital Volt Meters, Frequency Counters, Spectrum Analyzers and all appropriate troubleshooting general purpose equipment.
  • Oscilloscope and protocol analyzers, as applicable

Work Conditions

  • Primarily first shift; must be flexible for on-call support.

  • Exposure to moderately disagreeable environmental conditions.
  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to walk up the stairs of the locomotive.
