Thales is a global high-tech leader specializing in three business sectors: Defense & Security, Aeronautics & Space, and Cyber & Digital. It develops products and solutions that contribute to a safer, more environmentally friendly, and more inclusive world. The Group invests nearly 4 billion euros per year in Research & Development, particularly in key innovation areas such as AI, cybersecurity, quantum, cloud technologies, and 6G. Thales has nearly 81,000 employees in 68 countries.
The Toulouse site is responsible for satellite systems engineering, payload design and production, as well as the development and qualification of ground segments. It includes a research center and an industrial accelerator for start-ups and ventures.
This internship takes place within the Software & Algorithms team of the Antenna product line, responsible for engineering tools for the design and simulation of satellite antennas, including those with beamforming capabilities. The objective of the internship is to deploy and test a new beamforming method, based on linear programming, to optimize the flexibility and performance of active antennas. This mathematical optimization method offers unprecedented opportunities, such as targeted extinction or activation of radiating elements, or precise management of feeding laws (amplitudes and phases) with discrete levels.
You will first conduct an in-depth study on the application of linear programming to beamforming, then you will develop a prototype in Python, in collaboration with antenna designers. You will regularly present the results during team meetings and adapt the solution based on feedback.
