Job Summary

As a Junior Attorney at Universal Music Group's Virgin Music Group, you will be responsible for initiating, structuring, negotiating, and drafting various contracts including distribution, acquisition, label services, and brand partnerships. You will also manage digital records, provide reports, handle trademark and copyright research, ensure deadlines are met, and assist with invoice coding. The role requires strong legal expertise, communication skills, and the ability to work autonomously and collaboratively.

Must Have

  • Initiate, structure, negotiate, draft, and review distribution, acquisition, label services, brand partnership, and other related contracts, amendments, and related documents.
  • Negotiate and communicate deal terms with outside attorneys.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and organized system of digital records.
  • Provide reports on contract terms, recoupment, etc. to executives and other senior staff members.
  • Route all agreements internally and externally via DocuSign.
  • Summarize legal issues and prepare reports for senior attorney review.
  • Trademark and copyright registration research.
  • Ensure all deadlines and conditions described on contracts are met.
  • Communicate with accounting department to track and relay reporting delinquencies timely to licensees and legal as appropriate.
  • Assist with invoice coding using Virgin's internal systems.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish.
  • BA/BS degree, JD, and member in good standing of the California state bar or California registered in-house counsel.
  • Two to four years of experience practicing music law.
  • Exhibit a professional demeanor and good judgment.
  • Follow up on assignments until completion.
  • Self-starter who takes initiative and is resourceful; takes ownership of tasks and projects.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to interact with outside attorneys and executive management.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple assignments; work well under pressure.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively.
  • Knowledge of legal requirements involved with contracts.
  • Familiarity with copyright and trademark laws.
  • Familiarity with brand licensing and royalty accounting procedures.
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Extremely detail-oriented, with an ability to spot errors.
  • Familiarity with Apple computers and software, mastery of Word, Excel, and Preview/Adobe.
  • Can work independently with good judgment.
  • Solid research, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Organizes own work, coordinating projects, setting priorities, meeting deadlines, and following up on assignments with a minimum of direction.
