Job Summary

The Philanthropy Officer at Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and Planned Parenthood Action Fund (PPAF) is responsible for managing a portfolio of West Coast-based prospects and donors. This role involves qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, acknowledging, recognizing, and stewarding donors capable of making $25,000+ investments. The officer will develop and enact strategies to secure major gifts, build and manage donor relationships, and partner with internal teams and affiliate colleagues to identify philanthropic opportunities, supporting the mission of PPFA and PPAF.

Must Have

  • Manage the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, acknowledgement, recognition, and stewardship for a portfolio of West Coast-based prospects and donors with capacity to make $25,000+ investments.
  • Develops and enacts cultivation and solicitation strategies for a portfolio of prospects and donors at the $25,000- $250,000 level and above.
  • Builds and manages a network of relationships with current and prospective donors.
  • Cultivates, solicits and stewards prospects and donors.
  • Implements communication and relationships management plan for portfolio of prospects and donors.
  • Interacts with internal contacts to consult on PPFA and PPAF needs, to formulate strategies to promote prospect engagement with PPFA, and to identify potential donors.
  • Works with PPFA affiliate colleagues as an ambassador and partner to identify donor prospects.
  • Assists with the strategy for and creation of persuasive written communications from various PPFA leaders.
  • Participates in gift solicitations to fund PPFA and PPAF programs.
  • Travels (possibly extensively) commensurate with expectations for fundraising activity contact and travel (20% - 40%).
  • Portfolio management experience and/or direct donor relationship management experience of at least 3 to 5 years.
  • Experience developing and executing sound donor strategies to secure gifts of at least $10,000+.
  • Competency creating donor strategies utilizing best practice in donor moves management.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Comfort in online fundraising toolsets and databases including Salesforce and/or Blackbaud.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Experience qualifying and disqualifying prospects using research and instincts.
  • Proven ability to build deep and lasting relationships with a variety of internal partners and external individuals.
  • Impeccable discretion.
  • Deep commitment to Planned Parenthood’s mission and understanding of the Sexual and Reproductive Health ecosystem.

  • Experience working in an affiliate structure is desired.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America(PPFA) is a 501(c)(3)charitable organization that supports the independently incorporated Planned Parenthood affiliates, which operate non-profit health centers across the U.S. PPFA also works to educate the public on and advocate for issues of sexual and reproductive health. Formed as the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Planned Parenthood Action Fund is a separate non-profit membership organization tax-exempt under section 501(c)(4). The Action Fund engages in educational, advocacy, and limited electoral activity, including grassroots organizing, legislative advocacy, and voter education in furtherance of the Planned Parenthood mission.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and Planned Parenthood Action Fund (PPAF) seek a dynamic and passionate Philanthropy Officer. This job reports to the Director of Major Gifts in the Principal and Major Gifts department (PMG) in the Development division of PPFA. The PMG team raises revenue from high net-worth individuals and families by building and deepening relationships to yield six, seven, and eight figure gifts to support the mission of PPFA, PPAF, PPVotes, and the Federal PAC.

Purpose

  • The Philanthropy Officer is responsible for managing the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, acknowledgement, recognition, and stewardship for a portfolio of West Coast-based prospects and donors with affinity for PPFA and PPAF, and capacity to make $25,000+ investments in Planned Parenthood.

Engagement

  • This Philanthropy Officer will partner with the Director of Major Gifts, National Director, PMG, VP of Principal & Major Gifts, the Philanthropic Communications team, and others to develop philanthropic investment opportunities for high net-worth individual donors.
  • Externally, this role will be the primary liaison with donors as well as development colleagues at Planned Parenthood Affiliates.
  • Priority will be given to candidates on the West Coast.

Delivery

  • Develops and enacts cultivation and solicitation strategies for a portfolio of prospects and donors at the $25,000- $250,000 level and above. The ideal candidate will come with experience in cultivating and facilitating relationships. They must be unflappable, with excellent people skills, able to develop partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders, and possess impeccable discretion.

  • Interacts with internal contacts to consult on PPFA and PPAF needs, to formulate strategies to promote prospect engagement with PPFA, and to identify potential donors.
  • Works with PPFA affiliate colleagues as an ambassador and partner to identify donor prospects who may have an interest in our work.
  • Assists with the strategy for and creation of persuasive written communications from various PPFA leaders appropriate to a donor’s interests.
  • Participates (often in concert with others) in gift solicitations to fund PPFA and PPAF programs and to enhance development efforts.
  • Travels (possibly extensively) commensurate with expectations for fundraising activity contact and travel.
  • Performs other development-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Portfolio management experience and/or direct donor relationship management experience of at least 3 to 5 years.
  • Experience developing and executing sound donor strategies to secure gifts of at least $10,000+ and experience securing gifts from prospects.
  • Competency creating donor strategies utilizing best practice in donor moves management.
  • Experience working in an affiliate structure is desired, but not required.
  • Experience planning and executing of donor visit trips and events preferred with the ability to travel extensively.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication and presentation skills – including the ability to listen and target communication to specific interests of varied audiences.
  • Comfort in online fundraising toolsets and databases including Salesforce and/or Blackbaud.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills – with the ability to manage multiple assignments and quickly changing priorities in a fast-paced setting.
  • Experience qualifying and disqualifying prospects using research and instincts.
  • Proven ability to build deep and lasting relationships with a variety of internal partners, with whom no direct line supervision exists, as well as external individuals, from donors to board members. Impeccable discretion above all else.
