Job Summary
Motorola Solutions is seeking a Platform Engineer for their Cloud Platform and Services team, part of the Video and Software division. This role involves developing common platform services for SaaS solutions, designing CI/CD pipelines, and instrumenting services using Site Reliability Engineering best practices. The engineer will deeply understand and work with observability tools like Prometheus, Thanos, Grafana, Elasticsearch, and Kibana, operating large clusters on Kubernetes. The position requires a passion for automation, secure deployments, and enabling innovation, contributing to the engineering culture and best practices across the organization.
Must Have
- Deep understanding of Prometheus, Thanos, Grafana, Elasticsearch, Kibana
- Ability to scope, design, and develop custom solutions leveraging Elastic and/or Prometheus stacks on Kubernetes
- Experience operating large Elasticsearch and Prometheus clusters (100s of nodes)
- Proficiency in minimizing delivery time and increasing developer productivity through automation
- Willingness to work on-call shifts for deployed/developed services
- Maintain US Citizenship and US residency
- Lead by example and participate in early morning daily standups
- Proven experience building applications against third-party system APIs
- Proven experience with cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP) and their CLI tools
- Comfortable switching between Java, Spring framework, Golang, and/or Python
- Familiarity with modern development operations tooling (Trace based application performance monitoring, docker containers)
- Mentoring experience with junior team members and leading development work
- Pipeline automation experience
- Knowledge of SLOs, SLIs, and SLAs
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong background in platform engineering
- Must be able to obtain background clearance as required by government customer
- Required to be in the office once a week at Allen, TX, Salt Lake City, UT, or Schaumburg, IL

- Background in Linux/Unix Administration
- Prior experience operating Elasticsearch and/or Prometheus clusters
- Prior experience being on-call for services developed by the team
- Demonstrated experience developing and deploying automation for services on Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, or Google Cloud
- Experience with event streaming platforms such as Kafka, AWS Kinesis, Azure Event Hubs, or GCP PubSub

The Cloud Platform and Services team is responsible for the development and operations of critical cloud infrastructure and platform services. This team is part of Motorola Solutions’ Video and Software division, which offers secure, reliable and efficient team communications, workflow and operational intelligence solutions for mission critical public safety and enterprise markets throughout the world. Our services leverage Cloud Computing infrastructure on Azure, AWS, and GCP to build at scale.
Job Description
Our Platform Engineers
- Develop common platform services that can be leveraged by our SaaS solutions
- Design and implement CI/CD pipelines with DevOps principles
- Instrument services according to Site Reliability Engineering best practices
- Support secure and highly available deployments of their work around the world

Responsibilities
- Deeply understand Prometheus, Thanos, Grafana, Elasticsearch, Kibana, etc

Qualifications
- Proven experience with building applications against third-party system APIs

Preferred Qualifications

This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice's "Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy" and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent fingerprint background check administered by Motorola Solutions Inc. customers.
Our customers also require US citizenship and residency for this role.
Note: The candidate must be in the office once a week at one of the following locations: Allen, TX, Salt Lake City, UT or Schaumburg, IL
Target Base Salary Range: $85,000 - $100,000 USD.
Consistent with Motorola Solutions values and applicable law, we provide the following information to promote pay transparency and equity. Pay within this range varies and depends on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The actual offer will be based on the individual candidate.

Basic Requirements
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong background in platform engineering.
- Experience with Prometheus and Elasticsearch
