Job Description

As a Senior Technical Game Designer at Vertigo Games, you will be responsible for generating innovative game design ideas and implementing them using Unreal Engine's visual scripting. You will be in charge of various key game features, ensuring the best possible player experience by working in a multidisciplinary team. You'll need to manage your workload, analyze data to make informed decisions, and share your expertise with junior team members. This role involves working autonomously within teams, focusing on the project vision while working within the boundaries of existing IP. The role also includes responsibilities such as planning, managing, and collaborating with other designers and artists to ensure effective communication and clear documentation.
Good To Have:
  • Previous experience with designing and prototyping VR game mechanics
  • A solid understanding of puzzle design
  • Experience designing engaging enemy AI behaviors
  • Experience working on a AA+ single-player story-driven game
Must Have:
  • 5+ years of technical game design and prototyping experience
  • Professional knowledge of Unreal Engine visual scripting

Your mission
We are Vertigo Games, developers and publishers of top-end VR titles like Metro Awakening, Arizona Sunshine, After the Fall and The 7th Guest. Our Amsterdam studio has started development of our next VR game, following Metro Awakening, and we are looking to recruit a Senior Technical Game Designer who can aid us in our mission.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Generate novel game design ideas in support of the project’s vision.
  • Implement and iterate on design prototypes using blueprint visual scripting in the Unreal Engine.
  • Own various key game features through the full cycle of production from concept to release.
  • Be the spider in the web of a multi-disciplinary feature team, ensuring the best possible player experience.
  • Proactively plan and manage your workload and dependencies in the short and medium term.
  • Collect and analyze data to create options that can methodically drive design decision making.
  • Share your design knowledge and passion with junior team members, striving to elevate their skills and confidence.
  • Work autonomously in multidisciplinary teams.
Your profile
  • Previous working experience in technical game design and prototyping typically gained over 5+ years.
  • Professional knowledge in working with Unreal Engine visual scripting.
  • You have worked through the full game development cycle in a multidisciplinary team on a console or PC title.
  • Expert Understanding of Game Design Principles.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with programmers, artists, and other designers in a fast-paced, iterative environment.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to write clear and concise documentation.
  • You act as a driving force in an inclusive collective creative process, delivering the best player experience for the project’s vision whilst working within the boundaries of existing IP. 
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills as well as proficiency in English.
Bonus points for
  • Previous experience with designing and prototyping game mechanics for VR games.
  • A solid understanding of puzzle design.
  • Experience with designing and building engaging enemy AI behaviors and/or boss-fights using Unreal Blueprint behavior trees or HTNs.
  • Worked on a AA+ single player story-driven action adventure game.
