Job Description

Vertigo Games seeks a Senior Lighting Artist for their next VR game. Responsibilities include setting the mood and atmosphere of game environments (indoor/outdoor/cinematic), collaborating with level designers, improving lighting pipelines, planning and coordinating work, contributing innovative ideas, and documenting technical guidelines. The ideal candidate has 4+ years of experience in game development, understands art fundamentals and real-time lighting techniques (baked lighting, physically accurate lighting, etc.), is proficient with HDR & PBR workflows, and possesses a strong portfolio. Teamwork and excellent communication are essential.

Your mission
We are Vertigo Games, developers and publishers of top-end VR titles like Metro Awakening, Arizona Sunshine, After the Fall and The 7th Guest. Our Amsterdam studio has started development of our next VR game, following Metro Awakening, and we are looking to recruit a Senior Lighting Artist who can aid us in our mission.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Setting the mood, atmosphere and implement lighting for all game environments (indoor, outdoor, cinematic) in compliance with art direction and technical specifications.
  • Closely cooperate with level designers to ensure optimal player guidance.
  • Setup and improve lighting pipelines from preproduction to the final product.
  • Plan and coordinate your work regularly with your team, communicating effectively to ensure transparency and deliver tasks on time.
  • Contribute innovative and original ideas towards optimizing lighting and look development for the production.
  • Documentation and communication of technical and process guidelines for lighting creation and implementation.

Your profile
  • Experience as a lighting artist or closely related role in game development typically gained over 4+ years.
  • Understanding of art fundamentals, e.g. the function of form, light behaviour, color, proportions, and shape.
  • Great knowledge and use of real-time lighting techniques incl. topics like: Baked Lighting, Physically Accurate Lighting, Exposure, Atmosphere & (Volumetric) Fogging, Skyboxes/domes, Post Processing, IES Lighting Profiles, etc.
  • Familiarity with HDR & physically-based rendering (PBR) workflows.
  • Portfolio showcasing a range of lighting setups and visual effects in various digital environments and on characters.
  • Enthusiastic team player with a great passion for games & English on a proficient level.
Bonus points for
  • Experience with mobile and/or VR development.
  • Understanding of modern materials and shaders and being able to create these.
  • Understanding and being able to create blueprint logic in Unreal Engine. 
  • Experience and understanding of environment building (Unreal Engine preferred) & 3D asset creation.
  • Background in photography, filmography or traditional art.
