The Teardown Engineer is responsible for diagnosing root cause of failure on returned locomotive traction motor wheelsets. The role involves defining, developing, and executing the Combo analytical teardown process within the Forensics team of the Reliability CoE. The engineer will also analyze electronic Combo performance data and historical quality records, maintain steady output, and provide thorough analysis to identify and implement corrective actions. Additionally, the engineer will build technical expertise, enhance electronic workflows, implement continuous improvements, and collaborate with various teams including Engineering, Supply Chain, and Services. This role requires strong customer focus, root cause analysis skills, and the ability to improve analytical processes.
Must have:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • Experience in Manufacturing, Maintenance, Supply Chain, or Quality environment.
  • Willingness to travel 10% of the time.
Good to have:
  • Hands-on experience in root cause analysis of defective products.
  • Customer-focused in defining requirements and establishing priorities.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing PPAPs and SOPs.

Who will you be working with?
The Teardown Engineer is responsible for diagnosing root cause of failure on returned locomotive traction motor wheelsets (combos).   Root cause data collected is used to drive improvements in product design and manufacturing processes, providing a better product for our customers. The Teardown Engineer will define, develop, and execute all aspects of the Combo analytical teardown process, as part of the Forensics team in the Reliability CoE

In this role successful execution will require a strong customer focus, technical root cause analysis skills, the ability to continuously improve the analytical process, and collaboration with multiple functional groups including Engineering, other Reliability CoE teams, Supply Chain, and Services.

What do we want to know about you? 

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related field with minimum 2 years experience (Or Associate Degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related field with a minimum of 5 years of experience in Manufacturing, Maintenance, Supply Chain, Engineering, or Quality environment)

  • Willingness and Ability to travel 10% of the time

Desired Characteristics

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience performing root cause analysis of defective products and/or heavy machinery repair

  • Customer-focused in defining requirements and establishing priorities 

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills

  • Statistically literate and familiar with Six Sigma quality concepts and tools 

  • Experience manufacturing, remanufacturing, or servicing Combos or Locomotives

  • Experience with Reliance, Proficy, eServices, i360, and/or other existing Wabtec Transportation supply chain quality or operational data sources

  • Experience analyzing Wabtec Combo performance/test data

  • Change agent with strong credibility and influence in the organization 

  • Demonstrated ability to motivate others and achieve results 

  • Demonstrated commitment for process improvement 

  • Strong oral and written communication skills 

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills 

  • Ability to handle diverse activities simultaneously

  • Familiarity with manufacturing PPAPs, creating SOPs(Standard Operating Procedure), and performing gage R&Rs

What will your typical day look like? 

  • Ensure teardowns are performed in compliance with Environmental, Health, and Safety guidelines 

  • Prioritize, schedule, lead, and perform hands-on analytical teardowns and teardown reviews based on business criticality, customer requirements, and availability of required participants

  • Interact directly with customers during joint teardowns

  • Support other customer communication efforts by providing timely and accurate information to Wabtec customer interfaces, primarily through the Reliance Material Returns module, but also through other methods

  • Analyze electronic Combo performance data and historical quality records to supplement physical teardown evidence

  • Maintain steady output by managing process inputs and constraints

  • Provide thorough analysis quickly so corrective actions can be identified and implemented quickly based on the data

  • Build the body of knowledge and become a technical expert on failures modes and analysis techniques for the assemblies and components

  • Enhance the electronic workflows in Reliance in collaboration with the Reliance implementation team

  • Implement continuous improvements to further develop all aspects of the process

  • Seek, share, and institutionalize best practices

  • Work with quality champion(s) and other operating leaders to develop project deployment strategy, goals, and priorities 

  • Serve as a change agent by stimulating, communicating, and institutionalizing initiatives 

  • Communicate progress, status, and issues to champions and business leaders 

  • Supervise/mentor other team members, as required

Our job titles may span more than one career level. The salary range for this role is between

$60,700.00-$83,400.00

The actual salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands and work location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. More information on offered benefits, which include health, welfare, and retirement, are available at mywabtecbenefits.com.
