Job Description

The Technical/Material Artist will be responsible for creating high quality shaders and materials for characters and environment as well as textures for our title. The position will require providing technical solutions in creating, adjusting and optimizing shaders and textures, as well as creating models, VFX and assets when necessary. This role involves working with various tools like Maya, Substance Painter/Designer, and Unreal Engine, ensuring aesthetic goals are met while optimizing performance, and collaborating with other developers.
Good To Have:

Must Have:
  • Create texture and materials and apply to character, asset, props and any other 3D models in required aesthetic style.
  • Provide technical solutions in creating the required aesthetic look while meeting the optimization request.
  • Follow the given Art Direction and work with other Level Designers.
  • Create and maintain master materials, material instances, and internal tools or scripts.
  • Work proficiently with tools such as Maya, Substance Painter/Designer, and Unreal Engine.
  • Be comfortable working within a PBR workflow and using master material setups.
  • Support to develop look of 3D models, with textures and materials including fur and hair.
  • Provide feedback for textures and shaders made by internal and external artists.
  • Work with developers of other discipline to make sure that the scenes and art assets support the game performance and memory budget.
  • Help out with game design, or testing when necessary.
  • Look for and share information regarding latest best practices or tools for better or more efficient 3d art creation.
  • Perform special projects and other miscellaneous duties.
  • Test prototypes of future game titles to provide constructive feedback.

Position Summary:

Responsibilities:

Create Texture and Material

  • Create texture and materials and apply to character, asset, props and any other 3D models in required aesthetic style.
  • Provide technical solutions in creating the required aesthetic look while meeting the optimization request. Create and adjust textures and shaders to get the correct effect and achieve aesthetic goal.
  • Follow the given Art Direction and work with other Level Designers to ensure that environments are compelling both visually and also from a gameplay perspective
  • Create and maintain master materials, material instances, and internal tools or scripts to improve efficiency and consistency in the material pipeline.
  • Work proficiently with tools such as Maya, Substance Painter/Designer, and Unreal Engine for material creation, shader setup, and integration.
  • Be comfortable working within a PBR workflow and using master material setups to achieve consistent, high-quality results.

3D Modeling and Look Development

  • Support to develop look of 3D models, with textures and materials including fur and hair based on concept art or other specifications to be game ready.
  • Provide feedback for textures and shaders made by internal and external artists in order to fully develop the desired look in game engine.

Other Game Development Tasks

  • Work with developers of other discipline to make sure that the scenes and art assets support the game performance and memory budget as a whole.
  • Help out with game design, or testing when necessary.
  • Look for and share information regarding latest best practices or tools for better or more efficient 3d art creation.

Other & Miscellaneous

  • Perform special projects and other miscellaneous duties that are assigned by upper management.
  • Test prototypes of future game titles to provide constructive feedback.
  • Other tasks as assigned

Requirements and Skills:

  • 3+years of professional experience as a Technical or Material Artist, or in a similar position.
  • Intensive experience working with game engines.
  • Experience with Unreal Engine is a required.
  • Good foundation in art and design, includes composition, form and color theory.
  • Strong understanding of architecture and city planning.
  • Fluent with Photoshop, Substance Suite and ability to paint textures.
  • Basic knowledge with 3d modeling using Maya, Zbrush, or similar software.
  • Knowledge of managing art assets for games in clean organization.
  • Good communication skills - able to help others and ask for help when needed. Being proactive in sharing info and assets
  • Great team-player attitude - being flexible with new ideas, being open to direction and changes. Listening to team mates
  • Self-motivated - requires minimal direction, can carry on the vision for the level until completion and commit to deadlines

Salary Range: $60,000 - $100,000 per year
