Job Description

Sphere is seeking a Part-time QC Operator in Burbank, CA, responsible for the quality control of image and audio content from third-party vendors to the studio, and from the studio to Sphere venues. This role involves rigorously evaluating media, creating detailed QC reports, and managing communication of findings. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience as a video and audio QC operator, subject matter expertise in existing video and audio standards, and a high level of attention to detail to adapt to Sphere’s unique production environment.

  • Manage communication of detailed QC findings to technical and project management teams.
  • Assist in overall communications efforts with outside partners and vendors.
  • Participate in ongoing review and calibration of evaluation/reporting criteria for Sphere’s custom media planes and image pipelines.
  • View and operate various display devices and software/hardware platforms to evaluate content for defects, color and shading issues, video level consistency, scaling and motion artifacts, macro blocking and other quality issues.
  • Listen to and operate audio playback devices and software/hardware platforms to evaluate content for level consistency, channel or program sync issues, distortions, or other quality issues.
  • Exceptional attention to detail is mandatory.
  • Deep experience in QC standards and practices and a developed QC skillset.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience as a QC Operator in a large studio or vendor environment.
  • Working knowledge of post-production processes and workflows including ingest, editing, visual effects, motion graphics, audio, and color.
  • Experience with industry-standard asset management, QC and task tracking software.
  • Knowledge of various camera formats, production and post-production codecs, technical specifications, and metadata systems.

Who are we hiring?

Sphere is looking for a QC Operator to join a groundbreaking production studio based in Burbank. This role is responsible for the QC of image and audio content that is being created and delivered from third party vendors to the studio, and from studio to our venues, governing Quality Control tasks on all inbound media and outbound deliverables. This role requires an extremely high level of attention to detail and ability to adapt to the unique standards and processes used for Sphere’s custom environments. Candidates must display consistent technical judgement and strong communications skills.

The ideal candidate for this role will have demonstrated extensive prior experience as a video and audio QC operator. They must be a subject matter expert in existing video and audio standards and be comfortable working independently to evaluate a wide variety of production content. Should have a keen interest in developing technologies and enthusiasm for the future of entertainment.

What will you do?

  • Rigorously evaluate and create detailed QC reports for video and audio media. Review and validate automated QC reports.
  • Manage communication of detailed QC findings to technical and project management teams and assist in overall communications efforts with outside partners and vendors.
  • Participate in ongoing review and calibration of evaluation/reporting criteria for Sphere’s custom media planes and image pipelines.
  • View and operate various display devices and software/hardware platforms to evaluate content for defects, color and shading issues, video level consistency, scaling and motion artifacts, macro blocking and other quality issues.
  • Listen to and operate audio playback devices and software/hardware platforms to evaluate content for level consistency, channel or program sync issues, distortions, or other quality issues.

What do you need to succeed?

  • Exceptional attention to detail is mandatory. Deep experience in QC standards and practices and a developed QC skillset that includes but is not limited to:frame rate conversion errors, VFX/animation issues, stitching issues, chromatic aberration, timecode drift/sync issues, metadata validations and automated QC report validations.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience as a QC Operator in a large studio or vendor environment. Working knowledge of post-production processes and workflows including ingest, editing, visual effects, motion graphics, audio, and color.
  • Experience working with departments spread over multiple locations and interfacing with VFX, audio, color, and 3rd party vendors with clear and professional written communication.
  • Experience with industry-standard asset management, QC and task tracking software.
  • Knowledge of various camera formats, production and post-production codecs, technical specifications, and metadata systems.
  • Primary working hours will be weekday Swing and weekend shifts, determined on a job-to-job basis. Must have a flexible schedule and willing to offset shifts as workload dictates.
