We are seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join the Machine Learning Platform team at Nasdaq Verafin. This role involves analyzing real and experimental data to derive quantitative insights, contributing to data science initiatives from problem identification to prototype development, and devising solutions for non-routine analytical challenges. The successful candidate will assist with data-driven decisions and engage in continuous learning to advance solutions that detect and prevent financial crime globally.

Must Have

  • Analyze real and experimental data to derive quantitative insights
  • Contribute to data science initiatives through problem identification, solution design, and prototype development
  • Devise solutions for a variety of non-routine analysis problems
  • Proficiency in SQL, Python (including major data science libraries), and Java in production environments
  • Hands-on experience with distributed computing solutions using PySpark or Ray
  • Hands-on experience with Terraform and machine learning operations technologies on AWS (SageMaker, S3, Lambda, EMR)
  • Experience creating impactful data visualizations and applying statistical/mathematical techniques

Good to Have

  • Experience in the banking or financial domain
  • Experience developing in Scala
  • Strong understanding of statistical hypothesis testing for data sampling, bias analysis, A/B testing
  • Research experience demonstrated through publications in academic journals or conferences

Job Description

The Role

We’re looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join our Machine Learning Platform team, reporting to the Director – Software Development. In this role, you’ll help shape how we harness Nasdaq Verafin’s cloud‑scale data to design and deliver analytics that power our financial‑crime‑fighting network, advancing solutions that detect and prevent fraud and money laundering for institutions worldwide!

What You’ll Do

  • Analyze real and experimental data to derive quantitative insights
  • Contribute to data science initiatives through the identification of problems, design of solutions, and development of prototypes used to validate outcomes
  • Devise solutions for a variety of non-routine analysis problems
  • Work with talented, knowledge-driven individuals and share your ideas across the team
  • Assist with data-driven decisions based on project outcomes
  • Engage in continuous learning and knowledge exchange: ask questions, share expertise, and support team development.

What You’ll Bring

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related quantitative field
  • 2+ years of industry experience in Data Science, Machine Learning, or a similar discipline
  • Proficiency in SQL, Python (including major data science libraries), and familiarity with Java, all in production environments
  • Hands-on experience with designing, developing, deploying and maintaining distributed computing solutions using PySpark or Ray for data analysis and model training
  • Hands-on experience with Terraform and machine learning operations technologies on AWS ecosystem such as SageMaker, S3, Lambda, and EMR jobs
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with creativity to tackle complex challenges
  • Fluency in communicating technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences and collaborate across teams
  • Experience creating impactful data visualizations and applying statistical/mathematical techniques

Nice to Have

  • Experience in the banking or financial domain
  • Experience developing in Scala
  • Strong understanding of statistical hypothesis testing to apply them in data sampling, bias analysis, A/B testing
  • Research experience demonstrated through publications in academic journals or conferences

This position will be located in St. John's or Toronto, and offers the opportunity for a hybrid work environment at least 3 days a week in-office, subject to change, providing flexibility and accessibility for qualified candidates.
