Job Description

Springer Nature is a leading research publisher seeking an Associate Publisher for its Open Access Journals in the BMC Academic Journals group. This role focuses on managing a portfolio of open access journals in Cell Biology, Genetics, and Neuroscience, including society and proprietary titles. The Associate Publisher will be responsible for the strategic development and success of these journals, working with internal teams, external Editors-in-Chief, Editorial Board Members, and the scientific community. Key responsibilities include driving journal growth through development plans, ensuring a high-quality author experience, managing journal targets for submissions and publications, resolving pre- and post-publication issues, negotiating contracts, building relationships with researchers, and staying current with industry trends. A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field is essential, along with strong communication, problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Previous academic publishing experience is desirable.

About the Role

The BMC Academic Journals group aims to support researchers in communicating and advancing discovery for a better world. We do this by providing a trusted environment in which researchers can quickly, easily, and transparently share their discoveries, data, and research stories. 

We are seeking an Associate Publisher to manage a portfolio of open access journals in our division that includes both society and proprietary journals in the disciplines of Cell Biology, Genetics, and Neuroscience. Reporting to an Executive Publisher, you will be responsible for the management, strategic development, and success of the individual journals, liaising with internal staff, external journal Editors, and the scientific community. 

Responsibilities:

  • Drive the growth and development of a group of open access journals, successfully devising and implementing annual development plans.

  • Deliver best-in-class author experience and foster maximum engagement from Editors-in-Chief (EiCs), Editorial Board Members (EBMs), and Societies

  • Manage the annual targets for journal submission, publication and transfer volumes as well as target turnaround times.

  • Resolve pre- and post-publication issues raised by staff, EBMs and readers (e.g. authorship, scope, ethics and consent, misconduct, policies).

  • Manage contract negotiations with external parties by using/developing a working knowledge of financial profit & loss statements and forecasting.

  • Develop strong working relationships with colleagues, researchers, and external Editors, attend meetings where needed.

  • Gather, evaluate, and synthesise information from diverse sources to support data-driven decision-making and strategic planning 

  • Keep up to date with changes within the research community and publishing industry

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

Essential

  • Educated to Bachelor's degree level or equivalent, preferably in a relevant field of study (life, biomedical or health sciences)

  • A resourceful and proactive approach in dealing with problems and queries, and the ability to adapt quickly to change

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and influencing skills using diplomacy and assertiveness as appropriate

  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels and as part of a team

  • Ability to work on your own initiative and independently

  • Strong time management and organisational skills; including proven ability to take ownership of tasks and meet deadlines

  • Experience of developing and maintaining productive and friendly relations/partnerships with academic and industry-based researchers

  • Strong technical skills, with a sharp eye for detail

  • Ability to travel occasionally

Desirable

  • Previous experience in Books or Journal academic publishing is desirable

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $64,350 - $70,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level, and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
