Capitol Records is seeking an Associate Director for its Business and Legal Affairs team in Hollywood. This role involves structuring, drafting, and negotiating various agreements, including artist recording, joint ventures, distribution, and brand sponsorships. The successful candidate will also review contracts, provide legal advice on copyright, trademark, and compliance matters, manage external relationships, and obtain necessary approvals. This position requires a JD, California Bar membership, and 1-5 years of music law experience, with strong communication and organizational skills.
Must Have:

  • Provide legal advice on copyright, trademark, and contractual matters

  • Hold a BA/BS degree, JD, and California State Bar membership
  • Possess 1-5 years of music law experience
  • Experience drafting content acquisition, marketing, and exploitation agreements
  • Demonstrate knowledge of record label issues
  • Strong customer/client service abilities
  • Capable of multitasking and managing priorities under time constraints
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication

How we LEAD:

Capitol Records is currently looking for a lawyer based in Hollywood to support our Capitol Music Group’s Business and Legal Affairs team, who will report to the SVP of the Business and Legal Affairs.

How you’ll CREATE:

  • Structure, draft and negotiate agreements for all facets of label operations, including artist recording agreements, joint ventures, distribution agreements, creative /content production agreements, brand sponsorships
  • Review contracts and advise on other matters, with respect to various business and legal matters including copyright and trademark laws, contractual rights and obligations, legal claims and clearances, dispute resolution, corporate compliance matters, and recording budget administration.
  • Obtain all necessary management approvals on key terms of commercial agreements.
  • Manage critical external relationships with key representatives of a recording artist’s team.

Bring your VIBE:

  • BA/BS degree, JD, and member in good standing of the California State Bar or (eligibility to be California registered in-house counsel) required
  • 1-5 years of experience practicing music law preferred
  • Must have some experience drafting recorded content acquisition, marketing, and exploitation agreements.
  • Knowledge of record label issues.
  • Strong customer/client service skills.
  • Must be able to work under time constraints, multi-task and juggle competing priorities.
  • Computer experience: Internet, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Must have excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Highly motivated and with a desire to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to keep information confidential.
  • Must be self-directed and well organized.
