Job Summary

Epic Games is seeking an experienced Concept Outsource Lead to support and oversee creative content from outsourcing partners for Disney collaboration. This role involves providing top-tier creative feedback, documenting pipelines, creating asset examples, collecting references, and collaborating with Epic teams to ensure high-quality conceptual art that meets project needs. The ideal candidate is an experienced concept artist with a strong practical art background in game studio pipelines, understanding world-building, environment, character, and FX art.

Must Have

  • Provide top-tier creative feedback for outsourced work.
  • Communicate vision to vendors and ensure art consistency and high standards.
  • Create conceptual designs for environments, characters, and FX within the Fortnite ecosystem.
  • Collect or generate detailed documentation, video reference, and production examples for external vendors.
  • Make necessary corrections to maintain asset consistency and technical readiness.
  • Clearly communicate feedback to outsourcing partners and ensure creative goals are met.
  • Partner with internal Epic art teams to ensure outsourced conceptual art is clear and respects limitations.
  • Portfolio demonstrating variety of styles, creativity, and skill in visual development.
  • Keen eye for anatomy, architecture, color theory, composition, and FX.
  • Experience in at least one AAA game in a Senior Concept Artist role.
  • Effective communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to estimate tasks and maintain schedules.
  • Understanding of game art areas (animation, character, environment, VFX), workflows, and limitations.
  • History of working in a team and a high-pressure production environment.

What you'll do

Epic Games is looking for an experienced Concept Outsource Lead to support and oversee creative content provided by outsourcing partners as part of our collaboration with Disney. Reporting to individual art leads and working with the Outsource Manager, the Concept Outsource Lead will provide top-tier creative feedback for work submitted for Epic's review. While part of the role is supervisory, the person must be an experienced concept artist, having worked in game studio pipelines before and developed a solid practical art background. The ideal candidate would be a talented concept artist who understands world-building art, environment, character, and FX, is able to communicate with outsourcing partners, including documenting existing pipelines, collecting or creating examples of technical and quality level assets, collecting photographic references, creating moodboards, creating paint overs, and finally, collaborating with other Epic teams to ensure that the conceptual art is of the highest quality and adequately meets the needs of these teams and the project.

In this role, you will

  • Work closely with Epic's Art Leads and Art Director, Outsource Manager(s), and team artists to support external vendors.
  • Communicate the Rt direction vision to vendors and ensure generated art is consistent in tone and meets Epic's high standards.
  • Create various conceptual designs for environments, characters, and FX that exist within the Fortnite ecosystem.
  • Create various conceptual designs for creatures that exist within the Fortnite ecosystem.
  • Collect or generate detailed documentation, video reference, and production examples of art assets, procedures, and engine requirements to support external vendors.
  • If necessary, make the necessary corrections to keep assets consistent and technically game-ready as they are delivered by the outsourcing partner.
  • Clearly communicate feedback to the outsourcing partner and ensure creative notes and goals are met. Inform leadership if this is not happening.
  • Communicate and partner with Epic's internal art team to ensure outsourced conceptual art is clear and respects the limitations of other areas.

What we're looking for

  • Portfolio demonstrating a variety of styles, creativity, and skill in broad and varied visual development. From environments to characters and FX, the work must demonstrate strong creativity, aesthetics, and stylization, with the ability to create strong world-building visuals.
  • Keen eye for anatomy, architecture, color theory, composition, and FX, with an understanding of how art translates to later stages for production groups.
  • Experience in at least one AAA game in a Senior Concept Artist role.
  • Effective communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, being able to coordinate between internal and external teams and provide clear and concise feedback.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to accurately estimate tasks and maintain schedules.
  • Understanding of other game art areas, their workflows, and limitations (animation, character, environment, VFX).
  • History of working in a team and a high-pressure production environment.
  • BONUS: fluency in a language other than English, including Chinese, German, Spanish, Italian, or Russian.
