Job Summary
At Illumina, we are expanding access to genomic technology to realize health equity. As a Field Applications Scientist in Germany, you will be the first technical point of contact for customers, providing expert training, troubleshooting, and scientific consultation across Illumina’s portfolio, including CE-IVD diagnostic products. This role involves extensive travel and collaboration with internal teams to ensure customer success and drive growth.
Must Have
- Coordinate new instrument installations, including facility inspections, validation, and customer training.
- Ensure operational quality and instruct customers on system maintenance and best practices.
- Diagnose and resolve issues related to assay design, experimental setup, software, and instrumentation.
- Escalate complex cases to internal teams to minimize downtime and maximize customer success.
- Communicate technical updates and insights to customers and Sales teams.
- Understand customer goals, set expectations, and identify new opportunities for growth.
- Partner with Sales and Marketing teams to deliver workshops, demonstrations, and seminars.
- Contribute to departmental projects and strategic plans under Illumina’s team-selling model.
- Willingness to travel up to 80% of the time with own transportation.
- Hold a PhD in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Chemistry, or Biochemistry (or an M.S. with 3+ years of relevant experience).
- Experience in biotech, ideally within a clinical or regulated environment.

The role
As a Field Applications Scientist here at Illumina in Germany, you will be the first technical point of contact for our customers, providing expert training, troubleshooting, and scientific consultation. Reporting to the Manager of Service and Support within our Services department, you will play a critical role in ensuring customer success and satisfaction across Illumina’s portfolio, including CE-IVD diagnostic products. This is a highly collaborative role, working closely with Sales, Marketing, Customer Service, and Quality teams to deliver exceptional support and drive growth.

Why you
You are passionate about genomics and thrive in customer-facing roles. You may hold a PhD in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Chemistry, or Biochemistry (or an M.S. with 3+ years of relevant experience) and bring experience in biotech, ideally within a clinical or regulated environment. You are fluent in German and English, with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage complex technical challenges under pressure. Experience with sequencing technologies, lab automation, and bioinformatics tools will set you apart. Above all, you have a clear commitment to delivering exceptional customer service and the autonomy to work independently across your region.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Training & Installation
- Coordinate new instrument installations, including facility inspections, validation, and customer training.

You must be willing to travel up to 80% of the time with your own transportation and potentially cross-country to effectively support Illumina Customers.
