Job Description

Lila Sciences is pioneering scientific superintelligence and autonomous labs for life, chemistry, and materials science. This internship offers motivated students a chance to contribute to the daily operation of flow reactors, acquire high-quality analytical data, and collaborate with scientists and engineers. You will directly impact closed-loop optimization campaigns, accelerating discovery in human health, climate, and sustainability.
Good To Have:
  • Basic proficiency in Python or another scripting language for data handling.
  • Experience with flow reactor build and design.
  • Experience with robotics or automation platforms (e.g., LabVIEW).
  • Expertise in use and troubleshooting of analytical equipment.
  • Knowledge of multivariate data analysis.
  • Knowledge of machine-learning-guided experimentation.
Must Have:
  • Execute flow syntheses, including operation, parameter adjustment, and data interpretation.
  • Acquire and interpret data from inline & offline analytical instruments (e.g., UV-Vis, LCMS).
  • Maintain digital logs of experimental conditions, metadata, and results.
  • Support process optimization by analyzing trends and validating model-suggested conditions.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineers and AI scientists, communicating findings clearly.
  • Adhere to EHS best practices for reagent handling, equipment maintenance, and instrument calibration.
  • Pursuing or recently completed a B.S. or M.S. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related field.
  • Coursework or lab experience in organic synthesis, electrochemistry, photochemistry, or microfluidics.
  • Familiarity with analytical techniques like UV-Vis, UPLC, NMR, Raman, ReactIR/Raman, optical spectroscopy.
  • Comfort in wet-lab environments and following SOPs.

Your Impact

You will contribute to day-to-day operation of flow reactors, acquire high-quality analytical data, and collaborate with scientists and engineers to push the boundaries of autonomous chemistry. Your work will feed directly into closed-loop optimization campaigns that shorten the path from idea to discovery.

What You'll Be Building

  • Execute Flow Syntheses:
  • Operate flow reactors following established protocols; adjust parameters and collect samples - perform quick optimization cycles in parallel - analyze - interpret data - draw conclusions
  • Inline & Offline Analytics:
  • Acquire and interpret data from optical spectroscopy and chromatography, UV-Vis, ReactIR, Raman, NMR and LCMS instruments to monitor reaction progress and product quality.
  • Data Management:
  • Digital log of experimental conditions, metadata, and results to ensure data integrity for AI-driven analysis.
  • Process Optimization Support:
  • Work with scientists to analyze trends, propose optimization cycles, and validate model-suggested conditions in real time
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
  • Interface with automation and mechanical engineers, AI scientists; communicate findings clearly in meetings and written summaries
  • Safety & Maintenance:
  • Follow EHS best practices for handling reagents, maintaining flow equipment, and calibrating analytical instruments

What You’ll Need to Succeed

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a B.S. or M.S. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related discipline
  • Coursework or lab experience in organic synthesis, electrochemistry, photochemistry, or microfluidics
  • Familiarity with analytical techniques such as UV-Vis, UPLC, NMR, Raman, ReactIR/Raman, or optical spectroscopy
  • Comfort working in wet-lab environments and following detailed SOPs.
  • Basic proficiency in Python or another scripting language for data handling is a plus
  • Strong observational skills, attention to detail, and willingness to ask questions and learn
  • Effective written and verbal communication; ability to work in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team

Bonus Points For

  • Experience with flow reactor build and design, robotics, LabVIEW/other automation platforms
  • Expertise in use and troubleshooting of analytical equiments
  • Knowledge of multivariate data analysis, or machine-learning-guided experimentation
