Job Description

Thales Research&Technology and CortAIx Labs aim to propose breakthrough innovations and maintain technological advancement. This internship involves theoretical simulation to develop a design and optimization code for imaging optical systems for THALES group applications. The objective is to design optical systems capable of collaborating with algorithmic processing embedded in the detector, codesigning both the imaging system and the deconvolution filter to improve overall performance. The intern will study the use of optical metasurfaces as phase masks, which require advanced numerical simulation approaches.
Must Have:
  • Take ownership and master the advanced optical design tool integrating metasurfaces
  • Define and implement a methodology for joint optimization of the system including the metasurface and a parametric deconvolution filter
  • Explore different approaches, either “end-to-end” by simulating the complete system behavior on a set of images, or by imposing constraints on the modulation transfer function to ensure efficient contrast restoration
  • Knowledge in Optical Design
  • Knowledge in Fourier Optics
  • Proficiency in Python
  • Familiarity with optical design software: OSLO, Code V, ZEMAX
  • Knowledge in Electromagnetic calculation for sub-wavelength structuring
  • English (oral and written – B2/C1 expected)
Perks:
  • Our technological expertise
  • Our attention to employee balance
  • An inclusive and benevolent environment
  • Recognized societal and environmental commitment (Thales Solidarity, CAC 40 ESG index…)

Let's build a future of trust together

Thales is a global high-tech leader specializing in three sectors: Defense & Security, Aerospace & Space, and Cyber & Digital. It develops products and solutions that contribute to a safer, more environmentally friendly, and more inclusive world. The Group invests nearly 4 billion euros per year in Research & Development, particularly in key innovation areas such as AI, cybersecurity, quantum, cloud technologies, and 6G. Thales has nearly 81,000 employees in 68 countries.

Our commitments, your benefits

  • Our technological expertise
  • Our attention to employee balance
  • An inclusive and benevolent environment
  • A recognized societal and environmental commitment (Thales Solidarity, CAC 40 ESG index…)

Your daily life

Thales Research&Technology, our research center in hardware domains, and CortAIx Labs, our research center in AI and digital, are tasked with proposing breakthrough innovations, maintaining and increasing technological lead, and ensuring competitiveness for the group.

By joining us, you will integrate a passionate team and work on a subject that is part of a theoretical simulation project aimed at continuing the development of a design and optimization code for imaging optical systems for THALES group applications.

Your objective will be to imagine optical systems capable of collaborating with algorithmic processing embedded in the detector, codesigning both the imaging system and the deconvolution filter to improve overall performance.

You will study the use of optical metasurfaces as phase masks. These state-of-the-art components allow precise local control of phase and dispersion, but require more advanced numerical simulation approaches than simple ray tracing.

Your main missions:

  • Take ownership and master the advanced optical design tool integrating metasurfaces;
  • Define and implement a methodology for joint optimization of the system including the metasurface and a parametric deconvolution filter;
  • Explore different approaches, either “end-to-end” by simulating the complete system behavior on a set of images, or by imposing constraints on the modulation transfer function to ensure efficient contrast restoration.

You will have the opportunity to develop skills at the interface between advanced optics, numerical simulation, and signal processing.

Your profile

Are you eager to discover the field of research?

Do you aspire to complete your internship at Thales?

As an M2 student, engineering school student, or equivalent training, you have knowledge in:

  • Optical Design
  • Fourier Optics
  • Python
  • Optical design software: OSLO, Code V, ZEMAX
  • Electromagnetic calculation for sub-wavelength structuring
  • English (oral and written – B2/C1 expected).

Are rigor, autonomy, and analytical skills recognized as your strengths?

Then this internship is for you!

All our internships are formalized by an agreement and subject to remuneration, the amount of which is determined according to your level of study.

Thales, a Handi-Engaged company, recognizes all talents. Diversity is our best asset. Apply and join us!
