Job Description

Midgar Studio is looking for its Lead Game and Level Designer for its next project. You will lead a team of Game Designers, ensuring creative coherence and transmitting the game vision. Your missions include developing the initial game concept, defining gameplay mechanics, prototyping, balancing, and ensuring feature delivery. You will also be responsible for process implementation, team coordination, detailed documentation, and project management, including team supervision and recruitment.
Must Have:
  • Develop the initial game concept, defining gameplay, rules, and mechanisms.
  • Develop prototypes and test game concepts and mechanics.
  • Improve and balance the game based on playtest feedback.
  • Ensure delivery of features and milestones within planning and budget.
  • Participate in elaborating and implementing game development processes and pipelines.
  • Organize and optimize team work.
  • Create and update detailed Level Design and Game Design documentation.
  • Ensure good communication with various departments, considering their constraints.
  • Regularly inform production of team progress and anticipate needs.
  • Define objectives and organize team work respecting the general schedule.
  • Supervise team work and identify dysfunctions, proposing solutions.
  • Manage a team of Game Designers (Generalists, Level Design, and Combat Design).
  • Define team skill objectives and conduct annual reviews.
  • Participate in team recruitment if necessary.
  • Foster a positive and stimulating environment, sharing best practices and training junior designers.
  • Advanced proficiency in Unreal Engine.
  • Proficiency in JIRA and NOTION.
  • In-depth skills in creating balanced and innovative game mechanics.
  • Basic knowledge of Unreal Blueprint system.
  • Good command of level design phases and ability to translate design intentions into engaging gameplay.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in AA narrative and combat games.
  • Managed all development stages of several RPG games.

Job Description

As part of the development of its next project, Midgar Studio is looking for its Lead Game and Level Designer.

Within the Design department, and under the supervision of the Creative Director and the Producer, you will collaborate daily with all other departments of the studio (narrative, animation, art, programming, audio, and QA).

You will lead a talented team of Game Designers with Game Designer and Combat Designer specializations. You will coordinate everyone's work while ensuring creative coherence throughout the project and transmitting the game vision to the Game Designers team.

Missions

Conception

  • In concert with other studio representatives, you will develop the initial game concept. You will define the gameplay, its rules, and its various mechanisms.
  • You will develop prototypes and test game concepts and mechanics, then provide solutions based on results and various feedback.
  • You will improve and balance the game based on playtest feedback.
  • You will ensure the delivery of project features and milestones in compliance with the schedule and budget.

Process

  • You will participate in the development and implementation of the game development process and pipeline, in collaboration with the technical, creative, and production teams.
  • You will organize and optimize your team's work.

Coordination and communication

  • You will create and update detailed Level Design and Game Design documentation that exhaustively describes every aspect of the game.
  • You will ensure good communication with the various trades involved in the game, considering their constraints and assets in the development of the Game Design.
  • You will regularly inform production of your team's progress and anticipate its needs.
  • You will ensure the follow-up and transmission of information with other departments and production.

Project management

  • You will define objectives and organize your team's work in compliance with the general schedule.
  • You will supervise your team's work.
  • You will identify dysfunctions and propose appropriate solutions.

Team management

  • You will manage a team of Game Designers (Generalists, Level Design, and Combat Design).
  • You will define your team's skill objectives.
  • You will conduct annual reviews for your teams.
  • If applicable, you will participate in the recruitment of your team members.
  • You will work to create a positive and stimulating atmosphere, sharing best practices and training junior Game Designers, encouraging ideas, initiatives, collaboration, and autonomy.

Profile Sought

Required Skills

Technical

  • Advanced proficiency in Unreal Engine
  • Proficiency in project management and documentation software, JIRA and NOTION
  • In-depth skills in creating balanced and innovative game mechanics.
  • Basic knowledge of Unreal Blueprint system
  • Good command of the different phases of level design (prototype, block out, corrections and improvements) and strong ability to translate design intentions into engaging gameplay

Interpersonal

  • Creative and proactive
  • Strong video game culture, especially in the adventure-narrative genre.
  • Good management skills and strong desire to develop in this area
  • Excellent communication and solution-oriented skills, with an ability to work effectively with people from various departments
  • Excellent ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and concisely
  • Ability to quickly find creative solutions to design problems

Experience

  • Minimum 7 years of experience required in AA narrative and combat games
  • Having managed all development stages of several RPG games, from their conception to their release.
