Betfair is seeking a Legal Counsel to provide essential legal and compliance advice, ensuring adherence to regulatory obligations and supporting strategic business initiatives. This role involves safeguarding Betfair's regulatory standing, guiding internal stakeholders, and fostering strong relationships with external regulators. Must Have
- 4+ years PQE with a commercial law firm or as in-house legal counsel
- Current practising certificate in an Australian jurisdiction
- Thorough understanding of the Australian online wagering market
- Thorough understanding of Australian online wagering compliance obligations
- Experience in negotiating and drafting contracts
- Experience in preparing submissions to regulatory bodies and government departments
- Outstanding interpersonal skills including an ability to develop key relationships
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- A sound ability to use technology and software (including Microsoft 365)

We’re looking for a Legal Counsel to provide critical legal and compliance advice across the business, ensuring Betfair meets all regulatory obligations while supporting strategic initiatives across multiple teams. This is a pivotal role in safeguarding Betfair’s regulatory standing, guiding internal stakeholders and maintaining strong relationships with external regulators.

What you will bring:

Some tasks include, but are not limited to:
- Provide legal advice and assistance to the business units at Betfair (including, but not limited to, Betfair’s Safer Gambling, Risk Investigations, AML/CTF, Customer Service, Product and Marketing Teams).
- Interpret licence conditions, legislative provisions and regulatory codes.
- Review and approve proposed marketing material (both direct marketing content and advertising content).
- Noting that Betfair is a wholly owned subsidiary of Crown Resorts, regularly liaise with Crown Resorts’ Legal and Compliance Teams.
- Review and draft contracts, and provide advice on contractual obligations.
- Draft submissions to regulatory bodies and government departments (including in relation to proposed regulatory reforms).
- Chair internal and external meetings and, where necessary, draft minutes of meetings.
- Noting that Betfair is an Australian licensed online wagering operator and highly regulated entity, ensure that Betfair meets all compliance obligations stemming from: (a) licence conditions; (b) Commonwealth/State/Territory legislative provisions; and (c) regulatory codes (including the Northern Territory Code of Practice for Responsible Service of Online Gambling 2019).
- Draft internal policies/procedures and training modules to ensure compliance with obligations.
- Educate staff on compliance obligations and Betfair’s policies/procedures.
- Respond to internal and external audits.
- Build and maintain strong relationships across all areas of the business.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with regulators (including Licensing NT and the Northern Territory Racing and Wagering Commission), racing and sporting bodies, service providers (including external lawyers and Flutter (the owner of the Betfair Betting Exchange)) and Responsible Wagering Australia.
- Respond to correspondence and information requests from regulators.
- Prepare correspondence to customers and responses to customer complaints.
