About the role
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Payroll and Compliance Manager to oversee payroll operations and ensure adherence to statutory and regulatory requirements. This role is critical in maintaining accurate payroll processing, managing audits, and ensuring compliance with labor laws and tax regulations, especially in the dynamic and fast-paced IT industry.
The role reports to Head of Operations.
Responsibilities
- Payroll Processing:
- Oversee end-to-end payroll processing for all employees, including full-time, contract, and remote staff.
- Ensure timely and accurate salary disbursements, reimbursements, and statutory deductions.
- Manage payroll software and systems; coordinate with vendors and internal IT teams for updates and troubleshooting.
- Handle payroll reconciliations and resolve discrepancies.
- Compliance & Statutory Requirements:
- Ensure compliance with all applicable labor laws, tax regulations, and statutory filings (PF, ESI, PT, TDS, Gratuity, etc.).
- Stay updated on changes in employment laws and regulations and implement necessary changes in payroll processes.
- Liaise with government authorities and external auditors during inspections and audits.
- File monthly, quarterly, and annual statutory returns and reports.
- Audit & Reporting:
- Prepare and present payroll reports, audit trails, and compliance dashboards to senior management.
- Support internal and external audits with required documentation and data.
- Maintain accurate records of payroll transactions and employee compensation.
- Process Improvement & Risk Management:
- Identify opportunities for automation and process improvements in payroll and compliance operations.
- Mitigate risks related to payroll errors, non-compliance, and data breaches.
- Develop and implement internal controls and SOPs for payroll and compliance functions.
Skills
- Experience managing payroll for a distributed workforce across multiple states or countries.
- Ability to work independently and handle confidential information with integrity.
- Strong stakeholder management and vendor coordination skills.
Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, HR, or related field. MBA or professional certifications (e.g., CPP, CMA, CA) preferred.
- 5–13 years of experience in payroll and compliance, preferably in the IT or tech sector.
- Strong knowledge of Indian labor laws, tax regulations, and statutory compliance.
- Proficiency in payroll software (e.g., ADP, GreytHR, Zoho Payroll, SAP) and MS Excel.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
